Default Front imaging/Speaker placement question (Later Interior C4)

So I have this article I mentioned in another post with a 6.5" in the Sill, a 5-1/4" custom mounted in the door and a tweet in that dash (this was in a 1992)

So what would happen if the 5-1/4 and the 6.5" were swapped Location wise? install the 6.5" in the door and the 5.25" in the sill. Would that sound worse then with the 6.5" in the sill and 5.25" in the door?

Reason I ask is I am planning on moving my front speakers around and have debated on trying this. With the 6.5" I have to use I would get a decent amount of bass for my liking. I just don't know if it will sound good.

Thanks for any input you can give

6.5 will not really give you any substantial bass. The smallest true bass speaker is an 8" which won't fit. You could do both but it really won't give you any advantages. The car probably had both for show and the magazine instead of SQ. If you get a good set of seperates, a single set of mids should be enough. The door will sound better but that means cutting the door panel which can get expensive. The rocker location is less than ideal but needs minimal modification. Its up to you but doing the doors can get expensive. You may want to look into having the location where you want the mid in the door to be perforated. If you do this behind the carpeted areas it may even be invisible. Good shops should have the dies available to do this for you for a few $$$. Then they stay hidden, sound great, and you can eliminate if you want the stock location. Also, it shouldn't affect the resale to much if you want to take them with you and leave the locations empty.

Thanks for the tips. But with all I have done to the car I am not concerned about resale..

I had a set of Earthquake EQ6's in the back of the vette for a while that had a superb low end sound.. Better then the 5.25" I have in the doors now. I also had the EQ6's playing from 100hz down and it was enough for me..

Hmm I guess I have some deciding to do on what I want where. I have the door panels with the speaker already mounted in them but will be moving the tweeters and replacing the door panels with a better set I have. I just want to get the stereo sorted out before I attack the project

Tripleblack,

You said that an 8" won't fit.. Where in the door or in the stock location...

Would an 8" in the door with the 5.25" in the stock location and the Tweeter in the dash work?

Biggest I've seen fit in the door is 6.5. Same with the rail. It could theoretically be done but I haven't seen it. The C5s fit an 8" in the door easily. This is what alot of vert C5 owners do to get bass. If you want to mount one, get the dimenstions of one first, make a mockup of foam, the pink stuff from home depot works well as it is light, wont, scratch, and will show impressions of areas of contact, and see if you can fit one before you start cutting. Could be cool if you can get it to work.

I think I could get one in the door without too much trouble.. But there would be a limited area that could be perforated..

Also how would you perforate the area, how big a diameter for each hole and how much space between them? I would guess if I were to drill holes through a carpeted panel the carpet should hide them wouldn't you think?

So you are just suggesting use the 6.5" and a tweeter.. Nothing more?
If I perforate the door panel and if so of the area in front of the speaker is not perforated will that sound bad? considering the 6.5 will have a higher cut off point then if a Have the 5.25" in the stock frame rail location and have the 6.5 cut off around 400hz

MHO, the less crossover points the better. I prefer the sound of 2-way seperates, but amny like the 3 ways..
personal preference..

Yep- that's all you need. Well plus a subwoofer of course. Really no need for a 3way system in a car- just more headaches.

Well I don't want a subwoorer.. the 6.5" Earthquakes work well for that, but They use up all the space in the rear stock area. and it sounds okay but I would need some sort of rear fill.. maybe a tweeter running at a lower power..

Perforating is best done with a die that has tube shaped blades on it. This is pressed onto the panel and makes all the holes uniformly. It also doesn't get tangled in the carpet like a drill bit. Good sterio shops should have them on hand and be able to do the job for you. I'd call around.
