Default What Screen to Go with?

Hello ... over the past few weeks my dad has wanted me to install a cool setup in his C5 ...

He wants a Screen ... and I have decided to go with a fold out motorized Screen ... I looked into something custom like Noel of Autobuffs did ... but its beyond my capabilities ...

So ... please vote on which one of these brands to go with ... or add your own by replying .. I plan to go with the Top-of-the-Line from each brand ...

I was very impressed by the Alpine IVa and plan to put one in my C5 also. I still have to finish the last few details of my C4 install but have already begun planning out the C5 install. I will be going with 5.1 digital surround and DVD in the C5. :yesnod:

I came real close to buying the VRX-925VD. I liked the features it offered (in-dash DVD, Eq's, Built-in xovers...) and it's reasonably priced. I've seen it for under 1500.00 online.

The^Nomad ... I also plan to go with a DVD ... but not 5.1 ... I have heard that it is a major waste of money to do so in any car ... what do you think?

lcd sceen - 2000 for a good one
laptop 2000 for a good one, comes with a dvd player, a better quality picture, and umm... oh yeah a computer, imagine storing 10,000 songs on your pc, learn to wire(im sure you can though) and just put it in your glove compartment, you can get kits to mount to where the reg. screen would go

Your point is well taken ... but I dont want a 12 inch screen ... this car is too small for that ... my friend did exactly what you said ... and it worked well ... but it was an Explorer ... I plan to get the LCD mainly for Navigation ... and $2000 is a rip off ... I have good friends that work at stereo shops so my price is their price ...

The 5.1 surround is a tricky witch to get right but it can be done (somewhat). It works quite well in larger vehicles like SUV’s. One friend of mine installed 5.1 in his Hummer and another in a Ford Expedition, and although it doesn’t sound as good as my home theater does it is very sweet. I plan to do 5.1 in my C5 only because it will be a challenge. Also, when you have such a clean and clear Sound Quality system like I do now, 5.1 is the next logical step simply for audiophile purposes.

There isn’t enough room for desired stereo separation but that is true for any car and any sound system, not just 5.1. Like I said, it is certainly going to be a challenge, but shucks, that’s why we do this crazy car audio stuff isn’t it? Well that and the ability to sit in traffic, slip Gladiator into the DVD player and crank up “The Might Of Rome” in 5.1 digital surround and listen to the crescendo of bass roll off your eardrums. Or pop in Enya and feel like your in the middle of a concert hall, and if traffic starts to lighten up, you can tap the gas on your all mighty V8 and leave the Vetteless common folk behind while you ride boldly ride in audio glory to relaxation!

......and it impresses chicks. ;) :D

I have an Alpine CVA-1006 (same as IVA, but without built-in CD player), Alpine DHA-S680 DVD/CD Changer, and Alpine TCS-V430A TV Tuner multimedia switcher. This equipment is installed in my daily driver along with 3 amps, subs, and speakers all over the place. Very impressive setup, go with the Alpine.

I have the Alpine 801 HU and the 852a Nav. Very sweet set-up! I added the Alpine CD/MP3 changer too. I can use the CD changer with the GPS Nav system simultaneously.

I like everything about that unit ... and the KEG rocks ... but the partially motorized screen scares me ... that is what makes the Clarion better because it has MP3 and DVD w/ a fully motorized screen ... but no TV ... but a TV hookup shouldnt cost more than 500 for the Clarion making up the price ...

The Eclipse .. according to the info I have read ... has DVD/MP3 and a 5.1 sound processor all in 1 ... plus Eclipse Quality and performance ...

One thing all of you should know is that I used to work for Pioneer in the audio dept and have come to know that the screen's used in Alpine/Clarion/Pioneer/Sony/Kenwood/Eclipse ... are all the same ...they one have 2 options ... 6.5 vs 7 inch ... and touch or non-touch screen ... I say this for all of the IM's about the "crappy screens" in Clarions ... you know who you are

Hey .. The^Nomad ... do you have any pics of your C5 install? if not ... you have made me interested in 5.1 and I am wondering ...

I know where the front(L/R), rear(L/R), sub channel speakers can be installed .... but where are you planning to install the center channel? I have seen some small center channel speakers from Alpine and Kenwood ... but where do you plan to install it ?? There seems to not be a good spot on the C5?

IMO 5.1 decoding in a car is really not worth the money. The speakers are way to close to each other. My DVD changer has DTS out but I did not bother with the decoder. I opted to have the changer down mix the audio to two-channels and send it out over the AiNet Bus. The left channel audio goes to all of my left speakers (front & rear), and the right channel audio goes to all of my right speakers (front & rear). The Bass Engine feature of the HU and my external X-over makes sure the bass goes where it is supposed to go.

BTW - This equipment is in a Jeep Grand Cherokee, not a Vette.

Oh ... I know its not worth it if it costs extra ... but the Eclipse HU I am considering has a 5.1 decoder built in ... and I have found a local shop that will get me the unit for dirt cheap if I let them show my car in a few local shows ... they will supply the parts and install the system .... and I get a kick A** system and they get a show piece ...

That’s a good way to keep down the cost of your system. Personally I have a great deal set up with a friend that owns a car audio chain for advertising trade outs with my radio stations so some of my equipment is either free or at cost.

As for where to place the center channel, I was thinking up in the dash in the center of the vent. I have seen one there before. (I too would like some opinions on that) However, I will not be planning imaging yet until I finish sound dampening and get the resonant frequency of the car measured. I also have to finish the last minor details of my C4 install before I do the C5, I have pics of it but have just been to busy and lazy to get it developed, I really need to get another digital camera, this developing film thing is a PITA.

As far as I am concerned ... as of now ... the Kenwood and Pioneer are OUT ... I think I will wait til the 12th of July for the Specs on the Eclipse ... and go from there ...

from what I hear ... it will have DVD/MP3/AM/FM/6.5 Screen/5.1 Sound all bulit in ... and in a "black" casing ... the Clarion looks good ... but I dont like the blue in a Mag Red Car ...

Your right NewVetteLover, the blue really does not match anything. I have no clue why they did that. A grey or black would have made more sense. All of the features made up for the color though...
