Twin 8" subs in C4?
I was thinking of maybe installing a single 10" sub to the passenger rear compartment but then as a alternative I am wondering if 8" subs installed to rear 6x9" compartments would work??? It would make a nice hidden sub installation.
I estimate that the volume of these boxes is about 0.37 cubic feet +-10% (10 litres), what do you think? Is there any 8" sub that would work in such a small sealed enclosure?
I have 2 options for amp to use in this:
1. 4-ch. RMS @4ohm 4x40W, bridged 2x100W
2. 2-ch. RMS @4ohm 2x30W, bridged 1x100W
If I would install the twin 8" subs, which one do you think would suit better for subs and which one for the front separates?
Thanks,
Toni
They won't go as deep frequency wise as a 10
There won't be a location for rear speakers
It would cost more as you need more amp and two speakers instead of one
Ok, I've never heard what 8" subs sound like. Do they sound like subs or more like mid bass? My present sub is a 10" in a reflex box, do you think I would be disappointed with 2 x sealed box 8"?

IMO they are not really needed in a 2 seat car. Rear speakers are mostly for rear seat passengers. Ok, they add a little depth but I believe that with decent front separates and a sub(s) I should be happy.

So you think neither of my amps is strong enough to feed 2 8" subs? I need to upgrade?
Specs are in my post above. They are both Alpine V12 amps.
I don't want to spend a fortune but I am not on a minimum budget either, I have about $1.8K-2K invested in this present equipt. And I am willing to sell some and buy some new if they suit my Vette better. My main wishes are: good sound quality (i am no pro) and hidden installation, max sound volume is not important.
Thanks,

How "deep" they play has very little to do with driver size. Yes, I know I am going to start something with that statement, but hear me out. Keep in mind any speaker can play at 20hertz. The cone just has to move at 20 times per second. the key is will it move enough air to hear/feel it. Now, bigger drivers to have a little edge in that they have more surface area to push more air. Although, two 8's have more surface area that one twelve. That is just one factor.
The enclosure has a TREMENDOUS amount of effect on how well the woofer reproduces sound. I really good 8" driver in an optimized enclosure will reproduce bass much better than a low quality 12" in a poorly designed enclosure. If you are going to use them, find two 8" drives that can work efficiently in that small of air space. I used a/d/s/ for my system. You get the wrong drivers, they will sound awful. Talk to the guys at http://www.madisound.com. They really know their stuff. They could help you find the right 8" driver for your application.
One more thing, make sure you have plenty of power for your drivers. using them in a selaed enclosure like the back speaker compartments will take a lot more power than running them in a port enclosure.
I won't bore you with more details, but I just wanted to say if you get the right drivers with enough power, you would be very surprised what type of bass you can reproduce with the two 8" drivers. Granted you won't win any db drags, but if can sound pretty darn good listening to music in the car.

Would the 8's respond better to music where the bass is going really fast?
Would it sound cleaner?
Also, did you guys do anything/put anything to the area behind the speakers back there.

I don't think the lack of low bass with the 8s is a problem- those low frequencies rarely show up in most music.
Don't worry about losing your rear speakers. A lot of high end audio cars don't use rear speakers, or only at very low power. It is harder to match the sound of 4 speakers than two speakers in such a small area such as a cabin. If not installed properly, rear speakers will drop music quality.
The best advantage about the 8's is that you can put them in the stock location. My car was broken into and the amps and receiver stolen, but they didn't know about my subs. Having a 10 inch sub in a box is just begging to get stolen.
