Weird Ka band reception!
For the first 1000 or so miles of the trip not much excitement, mostly X band garbage near shopping centers and gas stations with an occasional K band chirp. Really dissappointed (not in V1 performance, but in lack of anything interesting. Hell, 1000 miles of drivng an SUV with a family can be really boring...) until I get my first Ka chirp from ahead. {I can't believe people think the arrows are a gimmick! It makes it really easy on a freeway like I-5. If the radar's in front, the cop is on the other side of the road and you can pretty much ignore it (or at least slow down to 80 and let less aware drivers speed by...).} The last 200 miles home was a Ka band fiesta, but always from ahead. Lots of cops on the road heading south. But here's where it gets weird...
I finally get a Ka chirp from behind me so I quickly slowed down and go to the right lane (it is only two lanes each way). The detector is going of like crazy, getting louder by the minute. I kept scanning the rear view mirrors for any sign of Mr CHiP but I found nothing resembling a threat ( I did spot one of the new, all-white Z28 patrol cars about 200 miles before, BTW). I briefly flashed on airplanes using radar but dismissed this as nonsense (correct???). Meanwhile a dozen or so cars passed me by, including an old, beat up Ford Camper van, until all of a sudden the detector went quiet. I kept my slower speed for a while assuming the radar was now off and that he was lurking back there but I eventually got back up to speed. I soon passed the beat up van again and within 2 seconds of doing so the Ka lit up like a Xmas tree again! I was stunned by this so I tried a quick experiment. I slowed down and let him pass me and as he did the Ka went quiet. I passed him and again the rear arrow lit up. I must have done this 5-6 times over 30 minutes and EACH time the Ka would go off when he was behind me!!
Anyone have any ideas what was occurring? I thought Ka band was only produced by radar guns. And I was only getting these signals when he was behind me within a 100 yards or so...
Thanks,
Crash
