Its time I replaced my Bose system in my '91. I've decided that the Alpine 7892 will be the head unit that will do all that I want. But...what speakers? I've been to some local "stereo" shops. Their selection for speakers is dismal at best. We won't even talk about their recomendations.
Any suggestions? I don't want or need the best, my ears just aren't all that good anymore. I'm looking for something that won't break the bank, and not have to do any mods to the car. I don't plan on using an amplifier or sub-woofers, just a nice system to listen to as I go down the road.
Thanks, John
For $300, I would get the Boston Acoustic RX97 6x9 speakers for the rear and RX 57 for the front. Both areas will need minor modification. The Rear will work best with the bose system removed, the hole filled with MDF 1/2", and a hole cut in the MDF for the speakers. Seal the containers tight.
The front will work in the bose enclosures. You will need to trim a little plastic on the bose box and seal the port out the rear of the box to make them air tight. http://www.tms-electronics.com has these for $250+ shipping. They are efficient enough to work well from a deck and strong enough to handle an amp upgrade. http://www.bostonacoustics.com has their specs listed.
I've ordered the new speakers etc and haven't even started the project yet and like I usually do, I'm starting to think about upgrades. I would think that an amp and sub-woofer might be next. I would want to stay with one amp to cover all the bases.
I use this car a lot to travel in, so I want to keep cargo space to a maximum. I'm thinking a 5 channel amp and a sub-woofer in the storage bin. Or maybe just the amp would be all I want. I listen to a lot of blues, some jazz and some old rock and roll and even some country now and again, so maybe I don't want/need the sub-woofer.
