Dual Voice Coils???
I'm looking at sub woofers and I hear the term "voice coils" and "Dual voice coils", what is what?
What do they do and how do I achieve the best "true sound". I'm not looking to boom and bump the neighborhood. I tend to listen to "Old school" and 70 rock.
Simple definition, dual voice coils are simply a speaker with another voice coil wound to the speaker allowing for more power to be applied to the same speaker if used. Also allow for more wiring configurations on amplifier load.
Will a dual voice coil sound better than it's single counter part, no same results either way. Will it handle more power and be more flexible in wiring yes. A single voice coil is the simple way to go two wires right to the amp. If your looking to supply a lot of power or need to use multiple speakers to acheive a given amplifier load then use dual voice coils.
Dual Voice Coil Subwoofers allow much more flexibility. One of the most common setups is running a DVC (dual voice coil) subwoofer in parallel. This will present a lower ohm load to your amplifier. For example, a 4ohm DVC subwoofer will create a 2ohm load on your amp. Since an amplifier produces more wattage at a lower impedance, this ensures you'll get the most output from your amp. Correct me if I am wrong, but the only drawback would be slightly more distortion (?). I run a DVC 12" in my car and highly recommend it.

Re: Dual Voice Coils??? (JoeyG)
Joey - Thanks for your help. So it is now my understanding that a dual voice coil sub will not sound better nor worse than it's single voice coil counterpart. That helps a bunch. I'm trying to build out a system and I have until friday. The place where I get speakers said that they had dual VC for the subs I wanted, in stock, but wouldn't have the single VC units until next week.
Here is what we have planned... any opinion?
Pioneer DEH 9400 head
XM radio GEXP900XM
JL Audio XR650cs componants in front doors
MTX 4405 5 channel amp (65w x 4 & 150w x 1@ 4ohms @ 14.4volts)
1 - MTX T6104 10" sub in 1cubic foot sealed enclosure
Not sure what we are putting in back quarter panels yet.
