Default Installing a new HU and amplifier questions????

Hello all:

I am sure that this has been run into the ground on the forum but I need to ask anyway and I hope that youze peeps do not get frustrated with me.

I have installed a few stereo's and accessories in auto's in the past. I am trying to add a new HU and amp to my new vette. I built my own sub enclosure for a 12" sub. I bought the amp and head unit wife won as a door prize a couple of years ago.

I made the appointment at a stereo installer's that I trust last monday. I told him that it was a pioneer DEH-P86DHR receiver and I have the stock 12 disc changer. I have gathered from posting about the changer in this forum that it won't work with the new HU, that is ok by me for now. Now I took the car to the shop and he calls me back a bit later saying that they need to get me an adapter for the bose speakers. I thought that they would have known that earlier in the week. Didn't happen.

Now what I want to ask of you all is this. What exactly is it that he needs a $70 adapter or a cheaper connector from walmart or something? Also if it is recommended by people should I just ditch the bose speakers and go with other speakers in it's place. I have read a few installs that people have done and I could go with that. Please make some recommendations people. I would greatly appreciate it alot.

Thanks,

Most people are tossing the bose speakers. Tripple black knows something about the adapters, so you might want to ask him if your gonna use one. On my 86 I put 5 1/4 speakers in the doors and a sub in the back and it works good.

Thanks.. and this is what I decided to do...

I am getting rid of the bose speakers in the doors and the rear. I am installing CDT Audio HD-642DT in the doors and CDT Audio Cambia CAX-500's in the rear. I will have an amp for the doors and rear with a seperate mono amp for the sub. Getting it done next weekend. It took me a few hours to decide to do this but hey what the hell huh? :p: Wonder how much time it is going to take to install them? hehe... I think that it should rock pretty well after the upgrade... woot!!!! :D

The adapter they were speaking of is called an OEM converter. Since a Blose speaker has a ½ ohm impedance the aftermarket head unit will not be able to handle that resistance. Simply put, the adapter allows an after market HU run the Blose speakers. You would need two of them for stereo separation and they cost around $70 to $80 each. Considering the price of these things as well as the fact they really don’t work very well you should by all mean get all new aftermarket speakers to replace them with. After hearing the greatly improved sound quality you will be glad you did.
