Re: Fastening Amps Down (DF)
Never just screw something onto the floor pan of a car; you never know what’s under there. You may puncture something that shouldn’t be punctured.
What car is this amp going in? Is it going in the ’85 Vette you have posted about before?
Does it have sport/power seats? I doubt you will fit an amp under there, unless it’s really tiny, you will also have a hard time cooling it there. Not much ventilation underneath a seat.
Try building an amp rack from MDF and mounting it in a location were the amp would get plenty of ventilation. There are a few places to consider for amp location in that interior.
Do you want to keep your storage compartments? If not, then they are a possible location with minimal modification. You could build a false floor in the back. You could even mount against the rear panel under the hatch. It all depends on what your setup is, how many amps, woofers, etc.
Under the passenger seat is the only place I really want to put them as I plan to stick a cd changer in one of the compartments behind the seat and need the space for other stuff. It is not a power seat on the passanger side. I can see what heat is like under the seat, but it is easy to add a fan or three.
How do I fasten some amps down under my passenger seat? Do I just screw them down or what?
I used velcro. Just stuck it to the bottom of the amp and it sticks to the carpet. Velcro to carpet isn't as tight as velcro to velcro, but it doesn't move since the under seat space is tight anyway. I think that I am going to move it to the rear area for better ventilation, but the velcro does the job. Get it at BJ's Wholesale or Sam's Club in the school supplies section. $5-10 for a lifetime supply.
Should be able to screw down under the seat. Like Nomad said, look before you screw. Make sure you visually and or feel wise see the back side of the panel you are going to screw into. I remember someone at my shop screwing in a dash speaker in a Jag. They had done this a bunch of times but this time they were lazy and used a 2" screw instead of going to get a 3/4" one. The extra length was just enough to make the screw hit a gas line in the dash. Why they put that there I don't know, maybe for the gauge, but lesson learned. We usually made an MDF board, covered it with carpet to match, and then screwed the board down. This allows you the flexability to screw anywhere on the board. 3 screws in a triangle pattern is all that is needed. Then you can screw the amp to the board safely. In your case, under the seat, you would not want the board as it will hurt your clearance. Jack it up a little and look under there to make sure there isn't anything in the way.
Yeah, I didn't even realize those were wired. The one on the right should be turned around 180 degrees so the RCAs and wires go between the amps and aren't all over the place for one thing. Power split off a block would also be nice here and the power wires look a little small, like 12 gauge wire.
