Everything fires up when a door is opened, and then stays on until a few minutes after the last door is shut, it's all controlled on the serial data line. The radio is "active", but only to generate the tones/beeps you hear, it doesn't visibly turn on until the car is started. The radio sends a 12v signal to the Bose amp to power it up, which amplifies the tones/beeps and sends them to the front speakers. Clear as mud
If you're looking for a switched power source controlled by ignition, use the heated seats or wiper fuse.
So, just to be clear, when the ignition is turned on the radio sends 12v to the front speakers right?
In a couple weeks, I'm changing my interior over to cashmere and I want to add my own nerdy mod. I thought it would be cool to have the car greet me when I start it. Instead of just the DIC message I want the car to say "Welcome Larry...Supercharger Engaged". I know, I know, nerdy. My plan is to use an MP3 switch, which I was going to use on a pinball machine. It's powered by a 5v input and uses a headphone jack for output. I want to send the audio to the front speakers when the ignition is pressed. I'll have the Mp3 switch located in the armrest or glove box so I can reprogram the micro sd card to any greeting I want whenever I want to change it or I can just unplug it to disable it. I'll power it by the accessory plug (modified to turn on and off with ignition thanks to the fuse mod). If the front speakers don't work, I'm just going to mount small USB speakers under the dash (hidden of course).
C6 prints are HERE. The radio sends the +12v signal to the amp 'trigger' when a door is opened, it doesn't actually go to the speakers. The amp then amplifies any signals that come out of the radio. The power line is the white wire labeled "Antenna Enable" on the prints.
If I was trying to do what you're talking about...
I'd use the wiper or heated seat fuse as the ignition triggered power source for my new gizmo.
Disconnect the center speaker (instructions HERE) and use it as the directly connected speaker for your welcome message. As an added bonus, IMO the stock stereo will actually sound better with the center speaker removed.
