When I installed my new deck carpet I had to remove the Autotek Street Machine power amplifier. I didn't realize that it had a direct line to the battery. I touched the power line to the chassis accidentally when I pulled the wires out, got a "wee spark", resulting in a blown main fuse.
The original fuse was a 50 amp. I went to three stores today: Radio Shack, Circuit City, and Best Buy, all of which had a choice of 40 amp or 60 amp fuses. The installers at Circuit City said that the 60 amp fuse would be fine. It does work. But, am I running a risk of frying the amp should I do something stupid again?

Re: Power fuse amperage question? (decay)
What type of fuse is it? Is it an AGU, ANL, MAXI, MINI type fuse? It makes a big difference what type of fuse it is to tell you where to find the one you want at. If it’s a small amp and just running an average automotive fuse then go to Auto Zone or any auto parts store, even Wal Mart will have them. If it’s an AGU (glass tube) fuse, then you will need to go to a place that sells car audio. Just keep looking till you find it.
But to answer your question, no, a 60 amp fuse shouldn’t harm the amp but I would still keep looking for a 50 amp. Just remember to disconnect the battery in the future when doing electrical work on the car. ;)

Yeah, what Nomad said. Your Autotek could actually geta way witha 40 Amp, depending on the output load. 60 Amp is more than sufficient but will stilll allow adequate short circuit protection.
