When I bought my '86 two years ago all the speakers worked besides some intermittent static up front. Eventually the fronts went out one at a time and now I'm down to only one rear left while the other rings annoyingly which I know will soon stop once that speaker fully dies as the front two did. I tried replacing a front speaker which sounded amazing when it wasn't screeching and/or actually came on...so with further research it appears to me that the amps are actually the root cause of the issue. So my question is how do I replace the speaker system? Should I go stock and just buy all new speakers and amps which is about 700 dollars? And how do I go aftermarket...I'd rather avoid wiring if I can so could I just buy speakers and skip the amps? Thanks guys...
I just finished redoing my entire system in my 89 coupe. I put a Kenwood X799 head unit, a Kenwood power amp, two 5.25" Kenwood door speakers and 2 Kenwood 6x9s in the rear.
I also ran all new 16 gauge speaker wire. All this took me about a week to do. I made templates out of plywood to use the old speaker boxes and had to turn the factory grills around so they would clear the speakers. I'm going to make some nicer grills to replace the factory ones.
Getting to the amps is not easy, nor is getting to the original wiring. I figured it was best just to run all new wiring, plus the power amp needed a big power supply cable.
LMK if you need any tips on how I accomplished this.
