So I had to replace my driver's door sub in my wife's 2012 GrandSport CE. It had the same separation of the foam driver from the rear metal ring I've seen other posts about.
I was under the impression that all Bose door subs had the amp built on to the speaker making it challenging to do aftermarket replacements but when I removed the speaker there is no amp on it.
My dealer actually had a replacement sub in stock and although it was not the same part # as the one I removed (and not a direct supercession) it also did not have the integrated amp.
I seem to remember reading that GM made a change to the BOSE premium sound system for the 2012 Grandsports/Z06. Did this change include going to a centralized amplifier solution for the doors instead of dedicated amps integrated into the speakers themselves?
The integrated sub amps went away when they went to the 9-speaker setup with dash tweeters, either 2010 or 2011 model. They are now powered from the same amp as all the rest, and it is in the footwell to the left of the fuse box.
Does this mean it is easier to upgrade the factory speakers?
It isn't any harder or easier, but IMO when they added the dash tweeters it made the simple 2-way swap out pointless. OEM is now on par with the 'simple' upgrade.
However, for my money, removing entire door setup to install amped components and a real sub in the trunk is still very worth it.
