Default C5 Double Din modification

Thinking about updating the stereo in my 1999 to a double din. What exactly do they do to the surround to get it to work? Anybody have a picture of a stock and a modified surround side by side? Thanks for any info, I'm a little lost.

You have to expand the radio opening up and down, and then narrow the sides in.

I did mine in 2004 before there were tons of options. I was told it would not fit, it fit with some work on the antenna connection. (It was hitting the AC box)
I got it in without having to move the AC controller. I did this by grinding the top up. Grinding the bottom down to a really thin piece.
Then refilling the back pieces and tons of sanding

I glued in 2 plastic sides to fill the side gap.

I later changed it to where the sides did a curve in so the opening was narrower. Over time I think heat caused some movement and visible lines of the change showed up.

I want to put more stuff in mine now, so I cut that sucker all up, it is a very painful process putting it back together. Make small cuts

You might want to check out http://www.doubledmods.com/ as well.

Also, you have to mod the frame for all the stuff in the console. I did not want to remove it so I drilled a lot of holes in the back and bent it down. I should of just removed it and cut it. Which I did this time around

Don't be afraid to have Dennis do the mod for you, in the long run you'll be glad you did. Aside from having a better newer radio, you can have a lot more features built in such as nav, bluetooth, backup camera and sat radio. Once you do it you'll be glad you did. With Dennis you'll get best prices, great service and lots of choices and your car looks much more modern inside.
