I'm more and more thinking that it's because of the window antenna than the deck. I had poor reception with the stock and still have it with my Eclipse. I'm considering trying to mount a larger antenna somewhere else inside the body of the car to see if it helps.
Putting an another antenna inside the car is clever. Considering the body is plastic, it should work about as well as one outside the car. However, ...
I had an Eclipse headunit in a hardtop with a standard mast antenna. The reception was still horrible. I've mainly listened to the same station for 15+ years, and I can't pick it up at all in my Corvette even though it came-in static free with all of the other cars I've had over the years. I don't know if simply adding an antenna will help. After trying a couple of other head-units, I gave-up and bought a CD changer.
It is both the antenna and the large amount of RF hash noise that the electronics of the C5 spew out. The DC/DC converter inside the instrument cluster (to power the flourescent black light bulb) is a large source of interference noise when you try to listen to weaker FM stations.
