Can Anyone "Field" an Alternator Question?

Default Can Anyone "Field" an Alternator Question?

A diode on the alternator on my '64 let go (came unglued) and I've replaced the alt with a polished unit. The '64 has the square plug with a blue wire to the field and a white wire to the regulator. This later alternator uses a different, longer plug with a white and red wire. I need to splice a new plug in the line and was wondering about the field and regulator positions (not marked on the new unit). On the old alt, the field terminal on the alt (and blue wire on harness) is a about 15-20 ohms above ground, while the regulator terminal (and white wire) is half a meg above ground. On the new alt., one terminal (field???) is about 30 ohms above ground and gets the new white wire, while the other reads infinity and gets the red wire. In my mind, the red wire goes to the regulator (spliced to old white wire) and the new white wire (spliced to old blue wire) goes to the field. The confusion lies in the fact that these two terminals seem to be switched in position from the old alt. Also, before the white wire was the regulator and now the white wire (after the splice to the old blue wire) is now the field. Can anyone confirm this? Would sure hate to burn out this nice new alternator over something stupid.
