I'm new to car audio, and thought that you guys would probably have an answer to this question. From what I understand, the rear speakers are next useless, can I mount some speakers in the stock locations that will give more bass than stock, instead of going through all of the trouble of making a box/su. I know that I won't get the hard hitting bass of the sub set-up, but I just thought that it may sound better than stoc. I'm trying to upgrade the stereo a little at a time. I was lucky enough to get Conquers Alpine 7894 head unit, now it's time to do something with the speakers. I just have to figure out what to do.
All-in-all, You wont get anywhere with the rear speaker location. Sure, you can upgrade the rears but I dont think thats what you want and you will not get much bass, if any, at all. If you have the $$$ (approx. $450.00 with some luck and a little shopping) you should go with the JL AUDIO STEALTH BOX if you want to upgrade but keep it simple. It will give you more then enough bass. Heres a link:
I noticed some 8" subwoofers in Wal-Mart which would probably work better than the stock speakers, but would require an amp. I have a couple of 6 by 9 speakers and 2 12" subs in the back of my 85 coupe, but I'm not totally satisfied with the sound. I'm thinking of scrapping these and just installing the 8" subs. If I do this I'll let you know how well it works. Joe :chevy :chevy

For your question the best you could hope for in a coupe would be a dedicated 6.5" woofer setup. Power to run from 100hz down. It could be done for a moderate cost, but the end reult would take time and planning. Not to mention the fact that unless seperately powered would just give a moderate tonal bass feel.
