Default Focals - MB Quart - Not THis Time!

Cause I'm looking for an 8" (EIGHT) Driver/Tweeter system with comparable quality for my C5 doors. Who makes an equally high quality speaker that has this size driver - that also will fit in these doors?

focal makes a 7"
http://focal-america.com/catalog/utopia/180w.htm

Personally, I think the 6.5" system sounds better out of the two... More detailed.

Why do you want an 8" ?

Getting above a 6.5" usually means getting a 3 way system.

I can't seem to find the 8" component speakers that I have been looking at but changed my mind and will be getting these next: JL Audio XR653-CS 6.5-inch (160mm) 3-Way Component System. They will fit perfectly in the front doors.

Actually - I haven't heard Focals at all but I know many swear by them.
I built a nice enclosure which I mount right behind the seats. (I use the back of it as an amp rack). Anyway, I put the 6.5 inch drivers (MB Quart)in this enclosure which sounds good and some 8" Free Air JL Audio subs in the doors. (They sound phenominal for what they are). I'm thinking of relocating the JL subs but want to replace the 8" openings with another high quality 8" driver. Basically to bring the imaging back to the front. While the system sounds very good - its not quite there yet..A good mid-base driver using the existing MB Quart crossovers (or a new speaker set altogether) should do the trick.....Question is - what exists for choices?

I bought those JL 3-ways and while they were good, I ended up returning them in favor of some MB Quarts reference series. Even though I went from a 3-way to a 2-way, it just sounded fuller to me..... But as always - its a very subjective thing...

Check out the Dynaudio System 260 (2-way 8" + Tweet) or the System 360 (8" + mid + tweet) I have the System 260 and I am totally satisified with the bass response up front !!

In my system, im using Focal 165W up front. 6.5 components. The imaging is perfect - except for "some" of the bass. That is because the sub is in the rear.

i have the front components crossed at 65hz, as well as the sub.

are you running rear speakers? don't.

I "Was" running some components in the rear, but disconnected them and WOW what a difference !! My Dyn's up front put out so much more now that I will never use the rear's !! The front staging is much more pronounced.

Webdzynes,
definitely check out the dynaudio's before you purchase. I think it would be tough to find a better set, imho, for the price.

Exactly the information I was looking for!! I've heard many great things about their line. Anybody know a good reliable online location to buy from? I see several listed but I don't know any that are reputable....(Average price seems to be $549...) Any retail stores out there that sell them for that?

Dyn is definately one of the few (such as Focal Utopia and Rainbow) that can be described as spectacular. :yesnod:

Anybody compare the Dyn 260's against the Focal Utopia's?

Actually - I haven't heard Focals at all but I know many swear by them.
Yes, they are very nice.

Actually, don't use the 6.5"s you have behind your head, that will improve imaging right there. Second, if you do use 8" mids up front, use a 3-way component set for that and don't mix speakers either, use one complete set. A nice component set up front like Focal, Dynaudio, etc. with something like a single 12" sub in the rear with nothing else back there, will greatly improve your imaging.

While the system sounds very good - its not quite there yet..A good mid-base driver using the existing MB Quart crossovers (or a new speaker set altogether) should do the trick.....
Do not use the MB passive crossover for a different brand speaker. Those component crossovers are designed specifically for the speaker they come with. Crossing over your mid using an active xover is an option but doesn't seem to fit what you are doing, although, I would use an active xover anyway regardless. Putting a component set up front would be your best option.

Question is - what exists for choices?
Some good choices have been listed above like Dynaudio, Focal and Rainbow. They aren't cheap though.

A reputable online source for Focal and Image Dynamics is:
www.sounddomain.com

Hope this helps. :seeya

Great information Nomad! you've given me a lot to think about. One question - is there so much difference between crossover makes that using a different brand driver (with my MB Quart xover) could mess things up? That - I would not want to do...

Focal tends to sound "livlier" than dynaudio. Whetehr this is a good or bad thing is up to you.

I presume you mean brighter? What about the base responce? I would think the Dins would deliver better here because of the extra inch on the driver, but again, I haven't heard them. Unfortunately there are no carriers around here so I have to rely on you guys...

I have heard the Focals & the Dynaudio 360's, in the shop & in different cars.. I went with the Dynaudio 360's.

The absolute best for someone who consideres themselves an audiophile.
AND for those who don't! :yesnod:  :smash:

It's hard to explain. It's like the Focal gave more of a "live" performance, and the Dynaudio gave more of a "well reproduced recording" performance. Both sounded great. My dollars voted Focal as the better one for me. But that's the hard part of car audio, it just depends on what your ears like to hear. Lots of opinions in the high end field, to say any one was "the best" is simply an erroneus statement.

Example, take four different midwoofers reproducing a single drum beat.

mid1: Bwung!
mid2: Bwang!
mid3: Pang!
mid4: Ping!

One person may like the one that goe s "Panga-panga-panga" but another might think that sounds kind of hollow, and preferrs his bass to go "Bwung-uh-Bwung-uh"
One may say that Mid3's Pang is the closest to the real life sound,
But another will say Mid4's Ping is DEFINATELY the real life sound...

So it's almost impossible to say. Ask 100 people, get 100 opinions. Only 1 matters, and it's yours.
