I went to Car Toys today and wanted an estiamte on just putting in a single din cd player and some front speakers and I was given a price including labor over 1500.00. I just wanted a middle Alpine cd player and some nice front speakers and the installing started telling me that they do not make any install kit for my 1994 Vette and he would have to make one out of plxiglass to hold the single din unit in place. I really would like to do all the install my self but it seems to me that it is a pain in the rear to convert this doucle din unit to a single din unit.
Do any of you have any suggestions ?

What's the breakdown on the labor/components? Sounds high unless you are spending $1400 on your components. Metra makes install kits for your car I believe. Can't help you beyond that, but wanted to post to tell you not to pay that price until you hear from someone else on the forum who can point you to what it would cost if you did it yourself. That is too high.

They are available from Best Buy. They carry the full line of kits. I used a single din pocket to fill the extra slot in my dash from them, $12. :flag

That place was not only trying to rob you, but they were also trying to rape you in the process. Stay far away from those crooks. As 92TB said above a METRA kit (very good kit btw) can be found at any reputable car audio shop for around $10 to $15 with the aftermarket harness for your car being around $20. Some '94 models have needed some slight sanding on one corner of the faceplate in order to get it to fit straight and flush, not difficult to do. However, I believe METRA has come out with a kit specially made for the '94.

Btw, even if you went to a professional glass company and had them fab you a whole new faceplate from ABS or Lexan it would still only cost you about $25 to $30. Taking into account that the HU you wanted was probably $300 and the speakers were probably $100 or so with labor being not more than $100 for a job of that sort. By them quoting $1500 for the job they are essentially attempting to steal $1000 from you. that is NOT $1100 worth of labor! Screw them and do it yourself, it's not hard at all. If you have any questions about the install there are several people here who can help you out.

Reasonable labor for deck and 4 speakers in a '94 is about $250 including kits, wires, materials, etc. Figure its 2-3 hours labor for a shop. That's taking your time. I can remove, wire, and install my deck in my car in 45 minutes.
