Default Formating a USB

I discovered something today with my music USB. I bought a new Mini 64GB thumb drive to load music on. When I received it I thought that I needed to format it before loading my songs. My Windows 10 computer however will not format in anything but "exFAT". Well not knowing what the hell exFAT is I went ahead and performed the format. The songs were loaded without incident. Now the weird part, it seems that my 2017 GS will not recognize media formatted in exFAT. So now I'm having to reformat to FAT32 using the command prompt/DOS and it's taking forever. So long store short, if you get a new USB or other media check and see what format it has from the factory, if it was FAT32, leave it alone.

Did the car recognize the 64GB device? I was thinking of upgrading my storage.

Wait a minute, are you saying that my 64GB thumb drive may be the problem? I thought it was the the type of format it had that was the problem. Have you had problems with large storage media not working?

exFat is the modern replacement for FAT32 and should work on 99% of devices calling for FAT32. But I just read the 17 Corvette will also read NTFS.

Thanks, I'm still formatting to FAT32 in DOS. It's been working for over an hour and still has 9% to go. I wish that I would have known all of this "Formatting" stuff before I started this!

The largest allowable USB FAT32 partition is 32GB.

This is probably what the OP did and it does state that it will take a long time. Also has option for 3rd party format tool that is quicker. But if the car can work with NTFS, I would use NTFS.

Flash drives will take a long time to format if you don't use the quick format option. Use this command at the dos prompt format driveletter: /fs:fat32 /q. It will only take a minute or 2 to format a flash drive.

I had the same issue recently, my son found guiformat.exe on the internet that will format the 64gb flash as fat32 for use in the car. It worked for my Samsung 64gb flash and my Pioneer head unit.

This will be useful info as I am installing a new Alpine 1DIN head unit and have a Alpine KTA-450 mini amp to install. I got some 64GB mini Sandisk USB for the music. And Alpine does state you have to format for FAT32. I don't get why they don't design their stuff to let you use exfat or NFTS or something. They must just be cheap using old technology like how their headunits still don't remember your settings when you disconnect the battery even though memory is cheap compared to back in the day so they could design it to remember your settings in permanent memory, but they don't.

I popped my Sandisk 64GB Cruzer mini-USB into the computer and from the factory it is formatted already for FAT32.
