Can those folks who are running 2-way or 3-way components in their doors tell me:
1) Where your crossovers are located? Out of all the pics on the forum of great looking 2 and 3 way speaker door installs, I've never seen the actual crossover boxes. Are you mounting them under the dash somewhere or next to the HU?
2)) How difficult is it to run new spkr cable through to the doors as opposed to using the stock wiring.
I tucked the crossovers in my 86 under the driver and passenger kickpanels. Didn't "mount" them to anything. Haven't had a problem, but am not an expert. And running the wires (again, in a C4, but it's probably not different in a C5) is a piece of cake. I left my Bose wiring in there in case anyone ever wanted to use the Bose again.
I mounted the giant Focal 3-way crossovers inside the door itself - behind where the window/door lock electrical connectors hook up - covered the top and sides in thick rubber (used to make garden ponds). I left the bottom open for cooling. I was concerned about water damage - but I've checked it and everything has been bone dry so far. Look at the picture below - note the four silver ss nuts inside the yellow box - they're holding the crossover in place.
Running the speaker wire is very easy - just use the existing wire loom conduit in the door.
Re: 2-way, 3-way speaker door installations (Still_Single)
I mounted mine in the same location as Still_Single but I just used velcro to install them. They are staying dry and I have had absolutely no problems with the install so far. :nonod:
I place my crossovers in the door whenever they fit - as long as they aren't mounted at the bottom of the door or in line with one of the window's edges, there won't be water/weather issues. To find where to mount, simply put the window down before pulling the door panel, then you know where the window goes inside the door so you don't have issues with contact in the future. Velcro or 3M VHB tape are all I use for mounting. If you can't fit them in the door, location doesn't much matter, the farther from the speakers though, the more wiring you need for the separate runs. It's all high level signal, so there's not an audible noise issue with long wiring runs.
Regardless of ease of running, I will NEVER use stock wiring with an aftermarket stereo. In the C5's case, it's actually a pretty easy run. There's a rectangular plastic access panel on the inside of the car in line with the stock wiring boot. On my car, they each had a white bar code tag on them - just pull that off and you have a straight shot to run wire into the boot. If you have trouble, pull the end of the boot out of the door or out of the car's body, both ends have a little slot to hold, you can pull them out and put them back in securely pretty easily.
