I have a '99 vert and recently had it into the local auto electric shop because of going thru 3 batteries in 2 months. They found a .3 amp power drain with ignition off. They disconnected the power wire at the amp and the problem is gone and the battery is holding charge now.
I have an Alpine head unit (radio with CD and equalizer) with a Sony amp (50 watts x 4 channel).
Now if I turn my radio on all that I get is the red power indicator lite and no station indicator, clock, or equalizer.
I think I have the original Bose speakers and obviously need a new amp.
Why is my radio not showing anything on the face when turned on and what are your recommendations on a new power amp? I really don't play the tunes much and don't need anything more than I now have.
Also, is it possible that I have the Bose speakers in this system?
The radio has two power wires. One is constant and the other is ignition. When they disconnected your amp power wire, they also disconnected your radio's constant power source. It sounds like whoever wired your setup didn't know what they were doing. Your deck should be wired to the stock harness in the dash. The amp should be wired to the battery with a fuse block in the engine compartment. To unhook the amp, they should have just removed the fuse. This would make the + to the amp dead but the radio should stay on. Also, test your amp to see if its on when the car is off. This would explain your power drain. The amp should be triggered by a remote line from the radio. To test, check to see if there is power on the remote line going to the amp when the car is off and the key is out and the door is open. If there is, the amp is not being triggered by the deck and it is wired incorrectly.
Don't just go buy a new amp. Take it to an electronics shop, they can most likely fix it. I already put this in a reply to your earlier post about this, but probably the only thing wrong with the amp is a $5 relay that's blown.
If you decide to just junk the old amp though, don't throw it away. I'll take it. I'll even pay for shipping. :jester
Thanks for all your replies. I guess I need to take it to a qualified car audio place. Since I'm an idiot when it comes to this sort of thing, can anyone recommend someone in the Detroit area to maybe straighten out my existing system's wiring?
Is this something that any car audio place can ususlly take care of?
I can do anything on a car except stereo systems.
