My driver's side rear Bose amp fried on my 92. It started poping and then I started to smell burnt insulation. I removed it from the enclosure and could not believe it did not start a fire. The connector and part of the black enclosure was melted and the PC board was black and badly burnt near the connector. I know the amp can't be salvaged because it is too badly burned. So much for fuse protected circuits! I know the dealer wants $300 and most repair houses want $100 to repair what is repairable but is there a used market for these amps with a price somewhere in between? My other three amps seem fine and am willing to spent some $$$$'s to replace my crispy one.

 

If the board is black it is most likely not salvageable. The repair places usually just replace the caps on the pcb. Blackened almost always equals completely fried.

You might be able to find another amp on ebay for cheap, if not, you will need to buy a new one. Wish ya luck! :cheers:

Put up some pics, if you can. Someone on here might be able to tell you what went wrong. If not, its always fun looking at blown up stuff. :D

 

I believe I know what happened. Upon closer inspection the sheet metal frame that sits on top of the amp was rusted directly under the two power transistors. It is now obvious water got in there and probably shorted out these two transistors which then burnt up the board. I see Mid-America sells a $99 replacement amp. Has anybody bought this amp, and if so, how does it perform compared to the original Bose amp?

 

If it is a replacement amp from MA, you can probobly assume it is OEM quality (which isn't really great to begin with). If you just want to match the rest of the system I would go with that.

OR...

Get a completely new stereo for about 500 bucks that will blow away the stock Bose...I mean Blose.
