I asked the following question on Sunday and no one replied. Isent an e-mail and no one replied. I'm not sure if I'm being ignored because I'm a "Junior Member" or no one kew the answer. Here's the question and thread.

I'm installing a new Alpine HU and I can't find a way to connect the illumination lead on the Alpine 7894 to a lead on the 92 Vette. The factory harness does not have a wire for illumination or dimming (it only has 4 wires on the power connector and the dimmer or dash lighting aren't there). How should I connect for lighting the HU? I've already lost a pound of skin replacing the Bose "POS". http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=452788

Thanks?

I dont think anybody was ignoring you. We welcome new members with open arms around here. I think the fact that you posted on a Sunday was the reason you got no response.

So first off, :seeya welcome to the forum.

I have never done an install on a C4, so I may not be able to give you the answer you need.

I installed my Alpine 7892 w/out hooking up the illumination wire. It illuminates, but I cant dim the display. If this is something you really want, perhaps you can find a wire that runs interior lighting on something close to the radio (like the climate control). If you tap the illumination wire from the Alpine into that, you should be able to dim the display. Sometimes though, the lights on the head unit might come on (or just the buttons) when the lights are on and the head unit is off. It all depends on the head unit. See what it says about the illumination wire in your owners manual.

Agree that you were not being ignored. Just slow during the weekend/holiday season! According to this site, the illumination wire is the gray one:

Honestly, I can't remember what color wire it was in my '86, but it's definitely in there - my radio lights dim with the headlights on! Good luck.

Thanks leolufse & Charlutz for your response. My main reason for wanting to know about the illumination was whether the head unit would illuminate without being hooked up to the stock illumination wiring. I wired it in temporally Sunday night and it lighted that's all I really cared about. I tore the whole Bose system out including the receiver because it's a piece of junk. The Alpine blows it away. Thanks again for your responses!

If memory serves, you can pick up the triggered illumination variable lead off the bottom of the steering column. I believe it is a solid brown wire. To verify take a digital multimeter NOT a test light and turn on the headlights, measure the voltage as you adjust the interior lights setting, it should vary between .5 volts to 12-14 DC. Hope this helps
