Default Will the Bose play CDR's?

Will the Bose Gold in my 96 GS play CDR's if they are recorded at a slower rate to insure good burning? Just asking those that have tried this before I spend a lot of time making a set of dupes.//Dave

When you burn music onto a CDR the format is the same as a regular CD. The format is called RedBook and was created by Sony. Since the format is the same all cd players should be able to read them. The problem comes with the different color of CDRs that you burn to. Some manufactures use a gold substrate, some use green, etc. Once in a while a CD player will have problems reading various CDRs just because of the color. In my experience the green colored ones are the worst ones. Usually the gold ones work the best. The quality of the optics within the cd player can contribute to the problem.

Also make sure you are not trying to burn MP3s onto a CDR that you want to play in your CD player. This is totally different format. MP3s are lossy compression algorithms and don't sound as good because information is lost. However they do make the audio files smaller in size which is good for the internet. Your CD player only reads RedBook. There are MP3 players that you can buy for your car but I thinkit is a waste of money.

I hope that helps. Good luck.

I'm having trouble with my C5 Bose CD changer...won't play any burned CDs (get heavy static and sometimes an 'Err' message on radio display)...it also gives a little static on some older CDs that are store bought (my Led Zepplin 2 CD for instance). I took it in to the dealer and they replaced the changer with a new and still the same issue. I'm going to try burning the music with different CDs and see what happens.

The main problem with burned CDs vs. store bought is the depth that the information is burned. If a store bought CD is burned to a depth of 10, a CDR is burned to a depth of 6 and a CDRW is only burned to a depth of 3.5 This means that it is 65% feinter than the store bought disk. Some brands burn deeper than others. The CD player in the C4 was never designed to read CDR or CDRW. Some are able to and some aren't. Remember, it is a player built by Panisonic for GM and the quality control wasn't the greatest. They also didn't care about getting the toleraces as exacting as needed for a CDR at the time so some will read and some won't. Try burning them at a slower speed. This sometimes also helps with the depth and readability. Hope this helps.

:iagree: Exactly, also only burn music on CDR's never CDRW's and always use CDR's with blue burn surfaces. The depth of the burn on the CD along with the ability of the player to read it is the problem. Shallow burns are more difficult to read by lesser quality technology. Newer, better CD burners will burn deeper however, the old Blose (Panasonic) HU's used poor quality lasers. This old technology was not designed to read CDR's like 92TB said so it's hit and miss on whether you're Blose CD player will read them. If you want to play burned CD's in your car without problems and your stock equipment doesn't do it, you unfortunately have just one option left to you....upgrade to aftermarket.

Well, I got over to the warehouse where the GS is stored and it does play the Maxell gold finish 650 mb that I recorded at 2X. Cool. Thanks guys for some insight into the potential problems. Best always,//Dave
