Default Neon Gills 101 - pics, pics, and more pics

Give me a second to finish putting my nomex on ... ... this has sure been a hot topic the last two days!

Many folks have asked what is involved in this mod - so I thought I'd help out - or add fuel to the fire - :D - however it turns out ... :)

First step - buy the neon - I got mine mail order, but best buy and pep boys are carrying them now. I used a small 6 inch tube on each side - you could go bigger, but I think a little neon goes a long way. Also, you don't want so much light coming out that the local police declare your lights illegal. (especially true for those doing red like I did - it could be considered a brake light if too bright.) Also, don't forget that blue lights anywhere on a car that is not a police vehicle is a guaranteed ticket that will be very difficult to get out of!

I would recommend two separate transformers instead of a single 'dual' transformer - the neon is high voltage and needs to be fairly close to the transformer. I had a dual unit - had to run an extension wire to reach - could never get the thing to fire reliably. I switched to two transformers and everythings fine now.

Step 2: Pull the front wheel and remove the back part of the wheel liner - something like 3 or 4 screws. (see pics) There's a separate piece of plastic in there with its own screws (2 ?). Remove it too - you're going to mount the neon to this plastic panel. (It's the panel you can touch inside the gill.) I bolted my neons to the plastic. (see pics) Use whatever means you're comfortable with. Reassemble the panels and wheel.

Step 3: Run the electrical wire for the neon inside the car - I ran mine up to the black wire-guard thats between the door and the car body. It's easy to get into the car from there. I mounted the transformer inside the car and hooked it up to a switch that was tied to accessory power.

Step 4: Do the same for the other side of the car. Hook that transformer up to the same switch. Make sure everything is fused properly.

That's it! Here's some pics to fill in the gaps ...

Just do me a favor and don't install them so that they light up the ground below the car! That would be rice! :yesnod:

Good Luck and get ready to dodge some flames from some fellow forum members!

it is a hot topic... no doubt... but it looks so cool...

it is a nice touch without looking tacky.

I think a nice green neon on my gills would look pretty cool!!!!

Well - I got a little fancy with the switch - I used a single pole, double-on with center off. Push the switch up, and the neons get power from the acc circuit. Push the switch all the way down, and it's what I call 'auto' mode - the neons get their power from the headlight relay. Center the switch and they're off. I used that theme on a bunch of the devices - the passports, the sonar, the cameras, etc ...

If you have any more pics showing the location of the transformers and the switch, I would appreciate it
