Inconsistent amp operation
Just picked up a 2013GS.
Car came with an Alpine iLX 650 head unit and a JL audio X-ray 500/2v/ 3 amp.
Also there are two crossover JL units in the system.
My problem is after starting the car, the amp may or may not turn on.
When it doesn’t, I get low volume out of the two rear speakers only.
When it does turn on, the volume is very loud.
The Alpine volume control does work for both cases.
Unsure why it doesn’t consistently turn on.
Any thoughts?
System appears to have been professionally installed.
Not too savvy with these audio systems. When I grew up, the
trick was to a speaker in the rear and use a fader potentiometer to control output.

Do you know if there's an interface installed with your system, and if so which one ? The interface should have an amp turn on circuit that sends a signal to the amp to turn it on, could be you have a loose connection on this circuit either at the interface, or the amp.

Status: Found a bad ground connection at the battery.
Installer ran ground and positive from the battery clamp
studs. The oversize terminals are hard to get tight and stay
tiight.

Connecting to the battery terminals isn't really a good idea for that reason, when you ground an amp, ideally you want to ground it as close to the amp as possible at a good chassis ground point. As for the positive cable, I suggest connecting it to the positive terminal of the under hood fuse box, it's a much more secure connection point, shown here. The cable shown in the picture with the red tape is my amps positive cable.

madsonp,
Thanks. Just did the positive cable as in your picture.
Trying to find the ground that is supposed to be on the passenger side behind the seat.
Can't figure how to get the trim panels off.
Searching the net.

Yeah I can't really say about the coupe, on my vert there's a good grounding point behind the water fall where the stock XM tuner was, I removed the tuner and mounted my amp in it's place and grounded it right there, but like I say, that's on my vert.

What year is your vert?
My 2013 GS vert has what appears to be a heavy duty sheet metal hex head screw with one ground
wire attached . It appears to be factory from the wire and terminal that is cripmed to it.

Mine's an 05, I'd say try the one you found, if somethings already grounded to it, you should be good. Just be sure there's no corrosion or paint on it.
