Default JBL amps any good?

I was surfing on eBay and see that you can get a JBL1200.1 for about $250. That's 1200 watts @2 ohms. What makes the JL Audio 1000/1 worth $400 more than this amp?

JBL has weak crossovers, but it's a bargain favorite on http://www.caraudioforum.cmo

everyone is hyped abuot the new Edesign nine.1 amp (1250 rms) and it can be pre-ordered for $250

I'm going to get one of those eventually and hook it to an Edesign E12A. Mmm. Spl.

the JL will actually sound better... thats what the 400.00 buys ya.

I don't really like the sound of the JBL's. muddy.

it takes more than power to make sound...

I just got the JBL 1200.1 Amp for my new 12" Diamond MacDaddy Sub and it rocks. Got it from here: http://www.etronics.com/product.asp?stk_code=jblbp12001
Ebay has a few of them listed, but you never know what you are going to get sometimes. You do not need a super high quality amp to run a sub, just good clean power.

Wow 1200 watts to a single sub? I was planning on using this amp to run 3 JL Audio 10w3v2s. The numbers on this amp are good: Less than .1% THD, and a SNR of over 100dB.

Do you have any trouble with dimming headlights? Are you running this amp with a cap?

Yes, when I really crank it up the lights will dim when the base hits. I used 4ga. high-strand power & ground wires and I plan on installing a 1fd cap next to the amp to take care of it though. At normal or above normal volume its fine though.
Where in the heck are you going to put 3 JL's in the back of your C5???

I built myself a custom enclosure that is (just about) to the exact specs of what JL recommended in the owners manual for the 10W3v2s. The box fits between the wheel wells with about an inch to spare on each side. I have a FRC, so the box is about an inch or so from the bottom of the rear window trim. The nice thing is that it isn't too deep, so I can still access my rear hatch panel.

I've got an MTX 6500D 800 watt amp running them now. The amp is mounted under the passenger seat and doesn't even break a sweat at 1.3 ohms. I just wanted to give the subs a little more juice to bring out their full potential. If I didn't spend so much money on car stereo stuff, I'd have enough to buy a digital camera and take pics of my intall

I ordered the JBL 1200.1 today at ikesound.com for $275 shipped. I, too, am running 4 gauge wire and have a .5 farad cap. When I ran that MTX w/out the cap, I coudn't see at night because the headlights dimmed so much. It made a huge difference, they don't even flicker now.

I picked up an Alpine 7893 while I was at it. :nono: I do not have mod fever.

So you think I should use a .5 farad cap instead of 1 farad? Price isn;t much different, but the .5 is smaller and lighter.
