I am currently trying to upgrade the audio in my C5. I am trying to match my sub to the amp that I already have and do not really know enough about car audio to know if I have matched them right. I currently have a Kenwood XR900-5 amp and am looking at either the Sony XS-W104ES sub or the JL Audio 10W0v3-4 sub. I know that I want a 4 ohm sub, I am just confused about the rest of it and how to figure out if the sub matches the amp right.
As far as the rest of the system goes, I have a Pioneer DMH-W2770NEX headunit, JL Audio C2-650CW speakers for the doors and some JL Audio C1-650CW speakers for behind the seats.

Well looking at the spec sheet for the amp, the channel for the subwoofer shows it to be 400 W x 1 RMS Watts per channel @ 4 ohms, 1% THD+N. So if the sub you're looking at is 4 ohms, you should be good to go. I think either sub would be good, the Sony can handle more wattage at 500 watts where the JL Audio is rated at 300 watts and your amps sub channel is rated at 400 watts. One of the main things about subs is the enclosure, and getting the correct volume of box space for the speaker, plus whether or not your going with a sealed, or ported box.
The specs for the box of the Sony are:
sealed box volume: 1.01 cubic feet
ported box volume: 1.44 cubic feet
The spec for the box for the JL Audio are:
sealed box volume: 0.65 cubic feet
ported box volume: 1.125 cubic feet
So the JL Audio could use a little smaller box than the Sony.

Reason: spelling

Thanks for the reply. The way you explained it made a lot of sense. I had no clue about the box size affecting the sub. I think I am going with a sealed box that fits in the center storage in the back of the car, so it should be less than 1 cu. ft.

the sealed subthump box i use in the center cubby is 1.1CF so it's plenty roomy for the specs of both the subs you've listed.
