After taking a shot at installing audio myself into my ‘88 C4 I decided to pay a pro to ensure there were no issues. Radio seemed fine for like a week then I suddenly got an Amp overload message. This guy said he’s getting the same message and isn’t sure what to do but he thinks it’s something to do with my factory fusebox. Any ideas? Headunit is a Pioneer dmh1700nex and all new speakers plus wiring. Car has a Holley Prodash and the audio guy thinks it has something to do with the issue. Sounds like the best option may be to install a separate fuse box just for the audio. Any input?

Couple things to check, did you use the proper gauge wire for the Positive and Negative power cables for the amp as recommended by the amp manufacturer ? You should connect the amp’s positive directly to the battery + and fused accordingly per manufacturers specs. The Pioneer should have a remote amp turn on signal wire that’ll turn the amp on when the deck is powered up. Did you ground your amp as close to the amp as you could ? Are you sure the speaker leads from the amp are connected properly i.e. Positive to Positive, and Negative to Negative ? Are you sure the Ohm rating of the speakers is within the Ohm ratings of what the amp can deal with ?

There is no amp. This is just the headunit and speakers.

Oh, ok guess I misunderstood, I’ll edit my original post accordingly.

yes I’m sure they are wired correctly. Speakers see 4 ohm and the headunit is supposed to be within 4-8 ohms.
update:going to return the headunit and try the same one to rule it out. This one was an open box excellent condition from Best Buy that doesn’t look like it was ever installed but you never know.

Could be the head unit, let us know what you find out.

Feeling bad for my poor car-I was looking thru the audio guys work last night and what a mess. I could’ve done a much better job myself.
I’ve got it working properly now but will be swapping the headunit for an identical one tomorrow just to be safe. Looking into adding a separate fuse box since I do plan on adding an amp and subwoofer soon,

Yeah, some shops do shoddy work, which is why I do my own installs. It’s best to review a shop prior to taking a car to them, anyway glad you got it working If you’re going to add an amp, it’s best to come directly off the battery with an inline fuse.
