Sometime, my alt generated more than 16V.
I thought that the DIC on my C5 vert may be bad but since I got the CAP with digital display and it also showed 16.5 V.
Sometime it dropped to 9 volts or some.
Does anyone know what going on? Bad alt?
Thanks
Re: Has your alternator generated more than 16V? (mike76002)
Sounds like the regulator or the rectifier diodes are damaged. I would replace the alternator. ANYTHING over 15v for more than a few minutes (due to cold (32 degrees or below) starting) is extremely bad for the battery cells (6 cells at 2 volts apiece=12 volt battery). A properly regulating alternator will run between 13.8-14.2 at 70 degrees F. Don't wait, run don't walk and change out that alternator before you damage the electrical components, battery, and god know what else.

Yes bad/damaged alt, but probably caused from a charging system not able to keep up with the extra demands put on the electrical system (imo). You might want to look into a higher output alternator and new battery. Try and see if the dealer will slip you a new glass mat under warranty. :D
Re: Has your alternator generated more than 16V? (JoeyG)
If you have a $200 co-pay, forget the stock altenator. Put that money into a high-output type. Ohio generator is a ggod place to start. Expensive, yes, but worth it. :yesnod:
By all means get a new alt. If I’m not mistaken don’t you have a Yellow Top battery? If so, keep it and just upgrade the alt, and make sure the Big-3 is upgraded as well. And I mean ALL THREE wires not just two like some people seem to think.
I emailed these guys about their Extreme Duty Dual Rectifier CS-144 alts, and this is what I got back: "At an 800 rpm idle you will get 140, 170 and 190 amps out of the 140, 170 and 200 amp alternators respectively." I think I'll be getting the alt for my system from them :smash:

Why do you think I love my CS144 case 220amp unit so much? :hurray:
Re: Has your alternator generated more than 16V? (The^Nomad)
So far I have only seen it happened 1 time and just for about 5 - 10 seconds so I will wait until I need to bring my car in for another service.
I think I got all 3 upgrades that The^Nomad told me so I would think it'll be fine for a while.
