I was going to get the custom JL sub box for my 2003 coupe. went to sound advice and they suggested using a 12" jl instead and they will build a custom box for it for about the same price-about $600 total. Anyone think a 12 is much cleaner or better than the 10, or if a custom box would be superior to the pre-made JL box.
I would go with the 12" driver myself. Or you could even go with two 10" drivers (or four 8" drivers). Building your own box opens up a plethora of options to you. But when you build the box, build it out of 3/4" birch instead of mdf. This will cut down on the weight of the box tremendously. :yesnod:
A custom box CAN be superior if done right, or it can be worse. If you or they do the custom box, make sure they know your main music prefrance so they can build it accordingly.
As far as sub size goes, depends on the driver. I would take a 10W7 over a 12W0 anyday!
BOOO!! Bigger is better. Tight bass comes from your midbass speakers not your sub. When people talk about tight bass, they mean the system Q is above 1. This essentially means that the system is not ideal in terms of frequency response. Go with the 12". You'll get deeper, louder bass. Remember, if it's too loud, you can always turn it down. If it's not loud enough, you're screwed...

:iagree: 10,12,15,18 all have "tight" bass, just got to install it properly...
I now have 2, JL 12W3V2 in a non seperated 2.5 cubic ft box( homemade) with a punch 700s(800 RMS @ 2 Ohms) pushing them, Hits pretty good, and sounds clean I think, and have been told by others!
