I recently purchased a 95 LT1 with the basic (non-Bose) sound system. I'd like to put some better speakers in for starters. Can someone tell me the size of the front speakers and how you get access to them? Also, what size are the rears. Is speaker impedance a problem, i.e. did GM put something wierd in here?
I have a 96 with the non-Bose cassette system and the speakers are the same sizes as Mark1376. I just pulled the back ones out and they are 10 ohms. I think most aftermarket car speakers are 4 ohms.
Yeah, they're all 10 ohm speakers in the non-bose system. 4 X 6 in front and 6 X 9 in back. I'm going to replace the fronts with 5.25 and put better quality 6 X 9 in the back, and they'll be 4 ohm. We'll see what that does to the stock amps. In theory I think you get more power, but.......
It just so happens that I have the Infinity Ref 4x6 and 6x9 ready to install as soon as the weather gets a little warmer. The 4 to 10 ohm impedance is a pretty big mismatch but solid state devices are a lot more forgiving than tube amplifiers (which I know more about). For example, Fender guitar amps can handle a 100% mismatch as long as you don't overdrive it all the time. If you do overdrive a lot the transformer will stress and the trans life is reduced. I would guess the 250% impedance mismatch in the Vette might stress out some parts but it should be able to handle it. Going down in impedance in a Fender amp is better than going up so maybe the same holds true for solid state?
Opps, that would be a 150% 10 to 4 ohm impedance mismatch. But, I'm really posting to let you know the 6x9 Infinity mounting holes do not line up with the Delco. Fun, fun, fun!
Well, I'm going to plug in some decent 4 ohm Pioneers and see what happens with amp. Thanks for all of your inputs, and I'll put something in here on how its sounds when I'm done.

Be careful not to trash your speakers. You might want to just scrap the whole base system and start from scratch. Save time and aggrevation.
