I can't get it to power up through the car. (And I don't have another car to test with) I know for certain that the power wires have power and that the thing was grounded.
Re: How do I bench test a head unit for power? (brianw21)
There are three wires that need to be connected to power up a head unit.
1. +12v
2. Switched 12v (Accesory)
3. Ground
Hook those up to a spare battery, or pop the hood and use jumper cables. If you have a spare PC power supply you could use that as well.
Then connect the speaker wires to a spare speaker, or RCA outs to a home stereo and away you go.
If you have a battery charger that would work as well.

I don't have a spare battery. If I pop the hood and connect directly to the battery via jumper cables, do I connect both the +12v and the accessory wire to the positive post of the battery? (and ground to the frame, of course)
