I have the Bose AM/FM/Tape in my '84. I get a lot of crappy noise in my driver's side door speaker, sounding like a spent cone. I swapped to passenger side and it seems to play fine. Questions: Are the amplified speakers individually amped, or one amp for all speakers? Where are amp (s) located and dificulty to replace? Anyone have an idea other than (read less expensive!) replacing amp?

Hi Nrens
Yes, you do have a bad amplifier on that side, the amp is an older amp and all the caps on that (p.c.b) board needs to be repalced, we can Repair it in 24 hours warranty the amps for one year, we also sell remanf P.C.B's.
Need more help let me know,
<ps> good luck on removing the speaker enclosure.

You have our sympathy  :jester

If it is a whining noise it is an amp going bad, if it sounds like the speaker is bad then it may be just that. Those old Blose speakers are just made of paper and they tent to dry rot and die.

They are individually amped. Each speaker has its own amp.
Where are amp (s) located and dificulty to replace?
Each amp is located inside the plastic speaker enclosure itself. Yes, they are very difficult to replace in the doors. The rear speakers however are very easy.

Nope, if you really want to keep the system stock you will need to replace the speaker/amp altogether. The only other option is to install a complete aftermarket stereo system. That includes new Head Unit, speaker and amps if you want them.
Re: 84 Bose Radio problem. Repost from Tech Tips (nrens)
If you contact Bose (numbers on their website) they will take the speaker/amp assemblies and rebuild them for $75 each and guarantee them as long as you own the vehicle. Waiting for the front ones to come back now!! :) Good Luck.
