What have you guys doen to replace the front speakers in the kick panels on a 92-96 c4? I am looking to replace the factory tweets and whatevers size the other one is
I'm with Andy and in the process of installing 5.25's in place of the stock 4 X 6 el cheapo speakers. There appears to be plenty of room behind the bulge in the kick panel. I'm making a 1/4 plywood mounting board for the speakers that I'll just attach to the stock baffle.
I went with 6's in the fronts but I had to mount it directly on top of the grill like so.
I had to have them placed on top because there wasn't enough room behind them. I plan on getting some carpeting and possibly making a custom cover for the speaker so that it'll look better. I don't like the look of them as is.
You still using stock head unit or what? If stock, is it Bose or non-Bose.
Thanks, I may end up mounting my 5.25's the same way but I'm a little worried about the grills getting beat up down there with your feet.
I decided to replace the head unit with a Pioneer. I'll be getting it installed tomorrow and if it works (HOPEFULLY!), I'll report on how they sound.
I was thinking the same thing about the grills getting beat up. I can feel them everytime I'm in the car. I'm thinking about possibly replacing those grills with one custom made. Wether I keep those or replace them, though, I am going to order up some carpeting to match the interior and possibly put some padding underneath it to help protect it. I'll have to find out what kind of padding I would need though so that it wouldn't restrict the sound too much.
I ended up putting 5.25 speakers up front in my 95 coupe to replace those junky 4 X 6's. Basically, I cut a small piece of 1/4 ply to cover the stock plastic baffle, then cut the holes for the 5.25 speakers. Mounted the ply to the plastic with screws and with a little foam tape behind it to prevent any vibrations Wired and mounted the speakers. Huge different with the stock non-Bose head unit - sounds great. The standard covers fit right over these with no clearance problems. These are Pioneer TS-G1357. :) :)
How do you take off the front speaker covers? The bottom part just pops out but the top part is stuck hard and I can't find any screws. Just asking before I break something! Thanks.
Front covers are much easier than they appear. Procedure is same for both sides. Open the door. Remove two screws from plastic trim piece on the "b" pillar where the door closes. The plastic piece comes right off. Now, remove two srews from the carpet piece on lower sill. With a little wiggling, that entire sill cover comes right off including the speaker cover. The 4 X 6's are mounted in a thin plastic baffle.
IM going for the single din headunit.. Ive seen this in some cars and its not to badd. The double din units are very nice but I could not see having a tape player..
So now my system will be
Kenwood Excelon CD player AM-FM tuner
Kenwood Excelon 10 disc CD changer
4 Infinity Reference 6"x9" 2 way speakers
2 4" MB Quart seps
JBL 1200watt amp.
Thanks and I hope its not to hard to install.. This will be one of past many..
