I installed a kenwood cassette deck with CD changer in my 69. I have two amps, one under each seat running through a crossover. I also have a 12" sub with two 6x9's in the rear and two 5-1/4" in the front kick panels. My problem is I have some unusual noise that I am dealing with. When the car is still, like at a red light or stop sign it plays beautiful, but when the car starts moving at about 30+ mph it sound like static that starts interrupting both radio and cd's. I haven't looked at anything yet, can you guys direct me before I get started so I won't be checking every thing and find the problem the very last thing I check! :D Thanks! Here's some pics of my set up.
Nice setup!
1.)Amps, crossoers and head unit all grounded to the same point?
2.) Are the RCA's for the amps ran down the tranny tunnel?
3.) Do I get to drive your vert?
4.) What kind of ignition, coil and wire set are you using?
5.) Where is the noise coming from, all speakers, front only, rear only?
Thanks! (1)The head unit is the only thing that is not grounded at the same point as the rest. (2)The RCA's from the head unit are ran down the trans tunnel. (3)Yes, if you help me get this problem solved! :D (4)I am using (pointless) Ignitor ignition system setup. (5)Rear speakers mostly, didn't notice any noise from fronts. I didn't have any time last night to do any trouble shooting.
Try moving the rcas away from the 12 volt lead that runs down the tranny tunnel. Make sure no signal or speaker wires run in parrallel to the power wires as well. If they do make sure the speaker/signal cables cross the power cables at a 90 degree angle, to cancel out generated noise.
Okay, I will try this, but man that will turn into alot of work. It might be easier to re-route the 12v cable itself or put some type of shielding on it. Do they make such a thing?
Not really, I've gotten creative in the past, used everything from industrial high pressure garden hose, to duct tape with a ground cable looped around the 12 volt cable to become an antanea for noise. Rerouting the rca's to one side of the tranny tunnel and the 12 volt lead to the other will help, but you've first got to see if the noise is both front and rear, or rear only, etc.... Then work from there. :smash:
When I installed the Petronix and MSD 6AL the same noise started to develop after about 1 month or so, I bought Taylor wires when I put headers on but did not check to see if they were RFI rated. With the cd ingnition it just made the noise conitnually worse until it got to the point that I couldn't even trun the stereo on with the engine on. I have bought new MSD 8.5 wires and will install a MDS noise suppression unit (about $30) and this should cure it.
