What Gauge Wire.
I am thinking about running second wire from Positive terminal of battery to alternator. I just ordered Rockford Fosgate Dual Amplifier Installation Kit. The power and ground are both 4AWG with 8AWG from distribution block to the amp. Is it appropriate to use the same gauge (4AWG) wire to connect to the alt to the battery or should I use a lower gauge wire? Also, how do I determine what kind of fuse do I use at the distribution block, and at fuse holder? Thanks

How much power do you plan on running?

I have 2 Soundstream amps. 1 is a Soundstream 300sx (300x1), which will be used for bass. The other is a Soundstream USA 364 (60x4), which will be used for satellites.

You don't need to upgrade your alternator wire with that amount of power.
However if you do upgrade it anyway, go with 4 gauge. Maybe some day you'll want to add a 1500 watt sub set up ;)
your current draw will be something like 80 Amps at full power... no sweat for your stock electrical system.

Just what I wanted to hear. Where do you get wire with a gauge lower than 4 anyway? I have not seen any on line.

I use walmart wiring kits. I got my 4 gauge dual amp kit for $24 there. You can get bulk wire at
http://www.sounddomain.com too.

If I were you I'd do it right the first time and upgrade the wiring to 4ga. 4ga can handle a current flow of 131amps so you'll have a little head room.

I just paid $89 for some Rockford Fosgate's and that was $60 cheaper than I could find it anywhere else. I will check out Walmart.

You are talking about from distribution block to amps, right?

alt to batt
batt to ground
engine(alt ground) to ground
make all those 4ga, then run a 4ga into the distribution block and run 8ga from block to amps

Would 4ga from distribution to amp be advisable?

Re: What Gauge Wire. (knesbitt)
it won't hurt anything, but it's not needed. if you're going to buy a bunch of 4ga to do the other stuff, you might as well use it for that too.

Will do. I might skip the alternator wiring. I won't be buying any McCintosh amps anytime soon.

if you skip the magic 3, if you notice your headlights dimming during stereo play, upgrade the wires...
also make sure you're adding fuses to everything as well

If it will cause dimming then I will. I will make it 4AGW all around. Thanks.
