Default CDT HD-52 questions

Can anyone give me the mounting dimensions (depth, cutout diameter, etc.) for these? I want to see if I can fit them in the kickpanels of my '71. I don't mind cutting the panel, but I don't really want to touch the framing behind it.

Also, if anyone has any pictures of components in early C3 kickpanels, it would help me out a lot.

Thanks in advance.

Check out my post here...
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=508780

it shows the hole and the dimensions. The one dimension I left out was the depth...which is 2 inches. You could weasel a slightly larger depth in, but I made a safe estimate of 2 inches to clear the bolt heads behind the speaker. If those are 5 inch speakers, I don't think they will fit. The width I had was 4 inches, so you will have to find a speaker with a mounting diameter of 4 inches or less. Never fear though, there are speakers out there under that size that sound really nice.

What 4.5" speakers are you looking at for your kicks? From what I've been hearing around here, CDTs are the way to go. They do make a HD-42. Anyone been able to hear how it sounds?

Actually, I already have Boston Acoustics Pro 4.5 Series components. It's a 4 inch midrange with a tweeter.
http://www.bostonacoustics.com/Produ...=4&SeriesID=20

You can find them for FAR lower than their list price. For a 4 inch component set, you will be hard pressed to beat these. They handle up to 300 watts, and they sound absolutely great for their little size. You will need something to produce the deeper bass of course. The problem in C3's, and especially early C3's is space. Basically, there is none. I had to build my own sub box to have a sub with the correct box volume and still be able to keep the t-tops in the back (wide, tall, and shallow depth). Also, there is no place to mount a nice 6-8 inch mid woofer, unless you do some custom work. The upside is that I can tell you first hand that with just good front components and one good 10" sub with a quality amp, you can get very good sound out of an early C3.

My plan was to fit what ever I could in the kicks, 5.25" or 4", and also squeeze a 10" jl in the rear. Being a convertible, I have even less room when the top is down (90% of the time). I haven't found a "good" example of a 10" in a C3 convertible.
I'm still looking for some suggestions on an enclosure.

I would love to use the doors, but unfortunately I don't have power windows so that pesky crank takes up all the room there. :(

Which model JL ? 10's don't take up that much space only a .5-1.0ft^3, you could make a little box that tucks away in the corner.

I was thinking of a 10W3. There's not really any room to tuck it in a corner. The enclosure can't be too tall or deep to fit back against the rear wall. It will probably have to be pretty shallow and wide across the back to get enough volume.

I needed about .75 cubic feet of space for my sub if I remember correctly. I made my enclosure the full width between the wheelwells, and 13 inches tall (the tallest I could fit without building the box in the car), and 7 inches deep, outside to outside. I actually housed the CD changer in one side of the box, and divided it. The other section is the sub enclosure. There was more than enough volume for the sub. I just calculated the volume needed, got the width dimension I needed to use with my heighth and depth, and dadoed a divider into the box. Being that your car is a vert you may have more or less room to play with than me. T-tops hog up a lot of room back there. You just have to be somewhat creative with your dimensions. I was creative, but only in a rectangular box sort of way.

In any case....it can be done. There are definitely ways to get C3's to sound good....no matter the space limitations. :yesnod:

with the top down take a measurement of the entire free space left, then I'll have an idea how much room you actually have, and we can come up with some idea for box for your car.

I also know an 8" that's better than the 10W3, and only needs .3 ft^3, you should be able to fit that in the storage compartment that houses the jack and not use up any space in the back.
