Default Radio Amplifier Relay Location

I have a 1988 Coupe with the Bose system. :skep:

The electrical service manual shows an amplifier relay in the circuit. Can anyone tell me where this realy is located? :banghead: :banghead:

On my 86 coupe it is located directly behind the I/P and to the right of the radio. it is a bitch to get at. it has 4 wires (on 86 coupe) A- pink with black tracer B. black C.pink
D.orange. You could get a relay on line for about 10/12 bucks or right from chevy for $16.00 :flag

That's the one. My manual shows the same wire colors.

Now do I remove the radio to get at it or the A/C Heater controls below the radio or the DIS above the radio or all three?

No matter how much room it looks like you have, EVERYTHING is hard to get at! :yesnod:

Thanks a lot

I had my done @ a local dealer who does lots of vette work. the tech took out the heater
controls the radio & the ugly bump on the passenger side of the dash, it took him about
hour & a half and he said he has done it many times before. I do not think you would have a hard time doing it at home. I farmed it out because I have a messed up eye (took a head shot in nam) and have a hard time getting my right to focus when I do close up work.
I did find a local radio shop who said he could do it in a half hour for $150.00 but his technician looked like Charles Manson & was stoned so I did the dealer bid. dealer charged $165.00 but he did nice neat work. good luck!! :flag :flag

Thanks for the info. I'm not sure how that "bump" comes out, I'll remove the radio and the heater controls and then the panel above the passenger's knees and hopefully I'll be able to find that sucker.

Thanks again for the info.

Thanks for the offer. I picked up a relay for $5.99 at Auto Zone. I spent 5 hours changing it out. I had to remove the dash pad, the A/C duct work for the passenger's side.

I could not get the "bump" off. I could not get the carpet section of the passenger's knee area out. There are two screws that screw into the bottom of the two metal straps that are part of that "bump".

After taking the whole dash apart and changing that relay, the radio works for about 5 minutes then it cuts out. Time for a new unit.

That was one pain in the butt!

Thanks for all of your help. At least I have a new amp relay installed. The old one was shot. It had leaked over its wires at the connector.

Why would anyone use two bolts to hold that relay onto the bracket that it is attached to is beyond me.

For what it's worth, there's flasher there too. There's one behind the DIC along with the horn relay. I think that's the hazard flasher. The second one is behind that bump to the left side and the only way to get at it is to either remove that bump which I can't do or take the dash pad off which is pretty easy. So if your flashers ever quit working and the one above the radio behind the DIC works then you'll know where the 2nd one is located.

Thanks again for your helpful info. Now to find a radio that looks good and half way matches the rest of the dash...

Default 86 Radio Relay

I'm looking at the same problem with my 86 convert. Does anyone know the GM part number for the relay? Is there a better replacement than the GM part?

Thanks, everyone!

I have no idea what this relay you guys are looking for does, but if it's just a 12vDC on/off relay that closes a set of contacts when energized, then any simple automotive relay should do the trick. I've been using them for years in many projects and they haven't let me down yet.

There's a relay for the radio inside the dash by the firewall. When it goes out, your radio quits working. Mine's out. I want to make sure I've got the correct part when I attempt to make the repair.

I got the GM part number. It's 14078902. It's not a standard relay, although GM used it for different applications in many different models & years. GM doesn't stock it anymore-I got one from Corvette Central (part no. 244409). There's a few on on eBay, too.
