Thinking about building a down-firing box... thoughts?
I was considering building a down-firing box for 2(maybe 3) JL Audio 10w3's. Here is a pic of my current set up:
As you can imagine, it hits pretty good, but my rear deck lid rattles like crazy. I've tried to adjust the latch and rubber stops, but there is just too much turbulance in the trunk. I was thinking about building the box where the subs would face the floor, while the box had "feet" on both sides to elevate it 4-6". This is the kind of design they use for Jeep Wrangler boxes so that the bass is not "lost" while the top is off.
Anybody have experience with a box like I am describing. Do you think I would get more bass, less bass, more rattles, less rattles, or it would end up being pretty much the same?

What's wrong with facing them forward?
GraveDigger,
I'm a big fan of the way you built your box, but I'm concerned about security. The way the box faces now, you can't see the subs at all from inside the car.
Something I'm going to have to live with I guess. Next time, I'll get a coupe. I'm sure the bass would sound much better with the curved glass and bigger hatch area.

nice setup guy.. I have the same amps and love them. Could of went with a red or a different color than orange.. but very well made amps.. The way the woofs are facing are backwards.. Turn them around in the same box and try that..
woofs always sound harder facing towards the back of the car..
IM trying to put 2 12"s in the rear of my convert.. Not easy. Wish I had a hard top to take off instead of this cloth top that needs replacing every 2 years.. To keep it looking new..
All looks great till I need to fold in the top then its a tight but works fit.. This summer I may take out the top and drive on nice days only.. Do they make a snap tonue(sp)
But anyways.. Work on the rattle use dynomat or similar and let us know if any of this helped..
But I like your setup for sure. Might want to get some 1/2" mdf and sint those amps in.. But looks great..

Well, I decided to turn the box around to face the front of the car rather than the rear. I lost a little bit of "boom", but the bass actually sounds much tighter now. And the cabin of the car doesn't rattle at all. I am more statisfied with the way it sounds and feels now, but I just don't like the fact that the install isn't as "stealthy" as it was before. Oh well, I guess if somebody wants to steal it, I can start over.
