I have the Olympus C-720.

It comes with a 16 MB Smartmedia card but I purchased and extra 128 MB card for it.
very nice camera and it was a tad over $500 with tax.

Get Sony.. I have bought tons of cameras and love every Sony I have had.. I even got a sony laptop,, Smart Sticks are awesome.. I went to Mexico and never took out the stick and took over 700 good size pics and still had car show pics from a weekend before..
I even bought my parents one cause they never had such stuff and they loved mine..
My Digi picture/video camera is a Sony DSC-F707 with more extras than I could use..But thats cause when I get somkething I have to get all the extras because sometimes companysstop making special hard to get items....
I also have a suction mount for those group drives :)

Well, I would try to find possibly a used Nikon Coolpix 990
I have that camera (its like two years old by now) and it is 3.34 mega-pixels...and it is just an amazing camera.
It takes VERY HIGH QUALITY photos...i took a few pictures of my old Explorer with it and sent them into a magazine to be published and they said they were superb quality!
Here is my fav. picture (to bad they didn't pick it to put in the mag :( ) http://www.cmeglow.com/Home/Richfront.jpg

3.2 mega pixels. If you email me i will reply with an example of the best/largest it can produce. I am picky and I am impressed for only 200.00 ... if you had to spead the full 500 I am sure you can do even better .... right now you can get alot for 500 in digital cameras.
My second concern over quality was I wanted something tiny... I use it to take everywhere... It is credit card sized but about an inch thick.

One of the best digital cameras, for the money, is the Fugi Film 40i. I bought mine for $500 a few years ago and I still can't find a better camera. It has a 3.75 zoom and 4.1 mega pixles. It even plays mp3's, not that I wanted that. If you can find one, jump on it.

SONY SONY SONY. I hate most of their products, but you can't beat their cameras. I have been using them for over 3 years and they are great. You might also want to try the new line of kodaks (I have not used them, but they seem to be getting some good reviews). Email and I will get into detail with you why sony is one of the best.
