Default Speaker decisions.....

I have decided to install new speakers in my Yukon. It is a 4 door with speakers in the front doors and rear doors along with 4x10's in the very back pillars.

I plan on disconnecting the 4x10's for good and replacing the speakers in the front doors and rear doors. I plan on putting 6 1/2 component speakers in the front doors and I can't decide what to put in the rear. My choices are either 6 1/2 2 way speakers or 6 /12 midrange midbass. Anybody have any insight which would be better?

:D All input is welcome.

I think it depends if you are gonna run a sub and if you are replacing the HU or not. Disconnecting the 4x10's is a good idea. I am a big fan of bright highs and tight midbass. So I would go with upper line MBs or Focals components in the front and the same line regular 2 way coaxial speaker in the rear doors (they are basically for the passenger anyhow). Run them all off a 4 channel amp at 100-150 watts per channel.

The YUKON (or just about any SUV) is a perfect vehicle to get pounding bass because of the large enclosed volume inside the vehicle. 2 10s or 2 12s in a sealed box facing towards the rear of the vehicle just behind the second row seats is the perfect location.

Give us an idea of what you want to spend, and what you want to run to help give more specific suggestions.

To tell you the truth I'm not to worried about the back passengers :leaving: I am installing a JL Audio 12 in the rear. So I will have a sub. The amp I am using is an Alpine MRV-F450. 50x4, 200x1. I am replacing the head unit with one that has front, rear, and sub preamp output. The speakers I looked at are Polk components. Except for the rear....not sure yet. The reason I chose Polk is because I'm kinda on a budget and my home surrond sound is polk and they sound really good. Thanks for replying.... I hope this helps a little...

Are you going to be using the Alpine to power just the sub or the fronts as well? The polks should work fine off the head unit. If you want some higher-end speakers, you should really get an amp.
Everyone has their own favorite speaker brands. I've had several types of MBQuarts ranging around the mid-high end. They sounded good but had harsh tweets and i could only listen to it cranked up loud for a short period of time (and I really like loud music). I've also owned a high-end Dynaudio 3-way comp set which I sold for a pair of CDT 6.5" Eurosport 2-way comp set. I have a friend who gets great deals on CDT gear.
You can always go into a stereo shop and audition several types of speakers. Most shops usually only carry the cheap-mid level gear, but that seems to fit your budget. If youd like to save a little more money, try to choose a set they carry then buy it online at places like thezeb.com, onlinecarstereo.com, etc.
if youd like a very nice set of speakers, my friend is selling CDT HDs (6.5" comp set) for a little less than $300 shipped and they come with a 5 year warranty. These are supposed to be the best choice for "off axis" applications. Here is a link to CDTs websites with a few reviews: http://www.cdtaudio.com/awards.html
Email me or PM me if you'd like more information on CDT. Before I bought my CDT speakers, I was looking at Diamond Audio HEX, Focal 165k2 and Image Dynamics Chameleons. I hope it helps. :smash:

That helps a lot. This sounds like a good set up and I think I have a good solution to the rear speaker dilema. For the moment I would pick up a set of mid level 6.5" components for the front doors. Then use the Alpine amp bridged to run the components and the sub (120 watts per channel for the components and 200watts for the sub in tri-mode operation). Use the new HU to run the stock rear door speakers. You will want to fade the sound about 75% to the front. If you decide later that you need better rear fill or want some additional high frequency sound, then you can swap out those rear speakers with a 2 way coaxial set and still run them from the HU.

I'd stay away from polk car audio. IMO they are not the company they once were. Look at the MB, JL, Focal, CDT.

Do you like your music to sound loud and crisp, or mellow and warm?

Well, I hadn't planned on using the head units internal amp ... just the 50x4 pushing the front and rear...would this not sound good? I listen to all types of music. I like really good clean sounding music. I thought about getting rid of the 12 and going with a couple of 10's. Also thought about putting an AudioControl EQS in line and keeping the stock headunit or still using the EQS and getting a new headunit. Think it would sound like crizap? Too many choices :cry

Well, 50x4 is just not enough juice to get component speakers to reach their full potential. But you can bridge the stereo channels on that amp to produce 120x2 which is ideal for just about any set of components.

Also, I think you would be happier with 2 10" subs over a single 12" in such a large vehicle, however your Alpine amp only puts out 200 watts to the sub channel. That is just about the bare minimum for a single sub, and it is not enough at all to run a pair of subs.
