C5 Upgrade questions / what to do first....
Two questions: 1) do I need anything special to keep the origianl bose amp/speakers working with an aftermarket HU? 2) while I'm running speaker wire for the rear amp, should I also run new wires for my replacement speakers in the furture along with an amp to run those as well?
There is always Plan B - save my $$ until I have enough saved to do it all at once. That won't be until late this year and I would rather enjoy the benefits of having the new HU installed now. The $$ is burning a hole in my pocket knowing I have enought to pay for the HU/amp/sub.
On a side note: my good buddy owns a smaller stereo business on the side called No Limit Audio who plans to use only Pioneer equipment and use my ride as a Pioneer show car once or twice a year. I can't complain since I'll get all equipment at cost with no charge on labor (except a case or two of bud).
Save the Wave!!
Use the new Pioneer HU to power the stock speakers. You will lose the Bose woofers in the doors, but you will retain the Bose 3.5" in the doors and the rear speakers. With the sub you will be able to get by w/out mid bass up front for a while. In the meantime, save up some $$ to get a matching amp and components.
When you (or they) do the install, make sure to plan ahead. Run 2 sets of RCA cables to the back of the car (even though you will only use one for now). Run speaker wire to the doors from the back of the car (again you will use this later). Also get a muli-amp wiring kit with a distribution block to easily add the second amp later on. This way, you will only have to tear into the car one time.
Use a generic GM wire harness and just run the 3.5" fronts and 6.5" rears off the headunit until you replace them. Especially if you are putting in a sub now.
