This is going to be a new one for me. Will it be better to use the Front and Rear, High Level Inputs and running all the wire up to the STOCK h/u, or would it still be better just to splice the RCA's into the outputs off the h/u?
Re: Wiring amp with High level inputs vice RCA's? (leolufse)
Ben,
I assume you are talking about keeping the stock HU and adding an amp for the components and a sub?
You are gonna get different answers for this, but the truth of the matter is that is doesn't make all that much difference.
Some amps, however, when you use the high level inputs on your amp, you don't need to run a remote turn on lead.
Right on, I am using the stock H/U. I have the door speakers installed, and wired to the amp, the power and ground run, I just need to figure out the best way to get the power via pre-outs.
Splice the RCA's, or use the Front and Rear high level inputs, and the best way to do it if the HLI's are the best way.
I guess for the front I would only tap into the L and R speaker wires, but for the rear to run the sub ?

Yup. If you want the ability to use the fader control to help level out the system from the drivers seat. Fade forward for more output from the components and fade rear for more output from the sub. So from the back of the HU you can run 2 sets of RCA cables (front and rear).
You can get away with a single set if you are not worried about being able to control the sub output from the drivers seat, you can adjust the gains on the amp instead. In that case, you would need to run a single set of RCAs from the HU, or tap into the L and R in the doors and run high level inputs.
If you amp will turn on using the hi level inputs (from the door speaker wires), I'd go that route.

I think this is a NO way in heck answer, but could I run one set of RCA's off the stock H/U and then use 2 y-adapters to send signal to the front and rear?
I think no, because I am specifically tapping L and R with the RCA's and I wouldn't get a left and right using Y-adapters.
I think I will use the 1 set of RCA's for the sub and then High Level the door speakers.

Heck no! There are 4 channels from the HU: LF, RF, LR,RR. A y adapter will not allow you fade front and rear. As a rule of thumb, never use y adapters unless it is absolutely necessary.

I wish I never would have started this project. If I knew that tapping into the stock H/U would be this much trouble, I would have just bought a new one.
I ripped the whole rear carpet out, and cannot find a useable ground for the amp. Splicing all the RCA wires into the stock preouts is just ridiculous. The wire I used for the remote is obviously incorrect.
I went to take the car to one of the shops in town, and noone will work on the Bose system.
I now have a $1000 worth of paper weights till I find someone who can hook this stuff up, or I am going to have to buy a aftermarket head unit. All I have for speakers is the 2 rears, since I am not pulling all the stuff back out. 3 days of work and I have no music. :mad
