I am new to this forum and to corvettes. Recently purchased real nice 90 convertible which has the bose gold stereo. Stereo works fine and sounds pretty good, but the model I have doesn't have the CD player. Thought about putting a FM modulated changer mounted on the deck behind the seats, but what I really would like to do is replace the Headunit and put 4" speakers in the bose enclosures in the kick panels and 6.5" speakers in the rear enclosures. Here is where the problem comes in I have been to 3 stereo stores in my area and everyone tells me that they can't install a system in my car without cutting the dash panels and manufacturing some kind of mount. I don't want to cut anything and would prefer to have the ability to put back the stock unit and speakers if I or anyone else ever wants to. What do you suggest, someone out there must have run into this issue before. Thanks.
Re: What stereo to install in 90 convert (Sinjin90convt)
Yep, I had the same problem. The only units I have found (of any quality) are Pioneer and Alpine. Pioneer makes a DEH-P77DF model and a DEH-P47DH. These appear to be the same unit except the -77 has a remote and the 47 does not. (I got the -47, I can't see a need for a remote in my situtation) Alpine does make (or made) a DIN and a half unit (model CDA-0853) that will fit. I could not find one for sale new, so I assume either it is a new model, or it is no longer in production. I have an Alpine CD changer in my Vette, but the Stereo simply does not have enough power to drive it. The trick is to get a DIN and a half size unit. There's not a lot of choice out there, but anything has got to be better then my stock (not even Bose) system!
Let me ammend my last post....
I have a 1994 and it has a Double Din case. Although I was told by 3 seperate Stereo stores that it was a DIN and a half. I ordered a Din and a half Pioneer, and guess what.....It doesn't fit. I took some measurements, went back to one of the stores and measured a Double Din.....IT MATCHED! So, to prevent anyone else from making the same stupid mistake I did, here are the measurements:
Double Din Opening 6 3/4" X 4"
Din and a half Opening 7 1/2 X 2 1/4
P.S. does anyone want a deal on a Pioneer Din and a half DEH-P47DH brand new in-the-box!
I have an Alpine CDA-7892 and its awesome. I've owned sony (sucked), kenwood (solid HU), and eclipse (great HU) before. The Alpine is better then all of them. Of course, the technology is getting better every year... Pioneer is a popular choice on the forum as well. I looked at the deh-p47H but went with the Alpine because of its better reputation and more features. Plus, its matches pretty well.
Re: What stereo to install in 90 convert (Sinjin90convt)
That's pretty strange that the install shops are telling you that. I picked up the install kit at an Autozone or Pep Boys when I was in the States for about $20. There's a mounting kit for the mounting of a Din sized unit in the stock location and an adapter to connect the aftermarket stereo to the radio receiver under the passenger side dash. I think the company was Metra...it's not a hard job to do, the hardest thing for me was finding the radio receiver!
Re: What stereo to install in 90 convert (90EXPVette)
Alpine makes some great units. (I have an Alpine CD Changer) I wanted something that would fit the opening completely. I just don't like using the DIN size units with a filler panel. The other option I've seen done that does look good is installing a stereo and an equlizer in the location. Maybe it's just me, but I want it to look like it was supposed to be there.
