My 87 convertible (with the factory Bose system) is experiencing a weird problem.
Whenever I slow down to idle, I get a ringing sound through my radio. It sounds like a phone ringing. The sound comes from all four speakers. I was sure it was coming from the radio, but I replaced the radio with a pioneer and the noise still happens.
As a side note: I kept the bose speakers and the sound quality is pretty good even with the mismatch in speaker impedence.
What else can be causing this noise? My guess is the low power input to the speaker amps are picking up noise from some other source. Has anyone experienced anything like this? The ringing is driving me crazy.
Sounds like alternator whine. Put the car in neutral and race the engine slightly. Does the ringing match the engine rpm? If so, you have alternator ripple (the alternator output is not pure dc, but dc with some ripple on top of it). Car radios have a large capacitor and maybe an inductor in the 12v lead to not allow this ripple from getting into the radio. If you are using the Bose amplifiers, they have large filter capacitors that also keep ripple from getting through them, but they don't last forever and considering the age of your car, the amplifiers may need new capacitors. Someone posted that Bose will rebuild the amplifiers for free. Give them a call and ask.
