How much total watts are you pulling? A cap would not hurt either way. However, if your current supply is not meeting the demands of your amps, then get a new alternator.
The cap will significantly reduce your "strobing" headlights.

You might need a cap, you might need a new alternator. Check out this thread:

Upgrading your big three is a band-aid fix. It stops the symptoms, not the problem.

Could just be crappy amps. I had a 150 watt soundstream "on its way out" that would dim the lights in both vehicles... but my 400+ watt ARC wouldn't even make em flicker.

batt to alt
batt to ground
engine to ground

unless your car is weird and the alt isn't grounded to the engine, then alt to ground

:withstupid: my truck has 750rms/1200max just to the subs and it's a ghetto install... my lights never dim, even at idle with the brakes and a turn signal on.

A lot has to do with the amps. I was running an MTX6500D rated at about 700 watts and I could hardly drive the car at night the lights would dim so badly. I added a cap to that amp and the dimming lights got a little better, but were still pretty bad. I got rid of that amp and replaced it with my JBL 1200.1 AND added a JBL 180.2 and removed the cap. I can crank that up till my ears bleed now and the lights dont even flicker. It is incredible.

Get the CAP. I did it on a whim and because I thought the vette looked ghetto with the dimming lights. Easy install and it really made the sound tighter. It no kidding made the bass nice and tight and made the mids and highs seem to roll off a bit crisper. Bottom line: big difference and worth every penny IMHO. Easy to do it yourself too.
