Im just about done with restoring my interior except for the stereo it came with a custom autosound usa 5 with the cd changer my problem the speakers kept cutting out first one then the left front and rear were the only ones working took it apart and it looked like a hatchet job
.now all I get is a couple of am channels fading in and out .
do you think it worth fixing or should I start shopping around ?
the cassett and cd dont work anymore either
thanks for any help you can give me steve.
:nopity :nopity
If the reciever itself is going bad it would be worth it to just junk it and get a new one...if the wiring is the only thing that is screwed up, just replace all of it and be on your merry way. From the sounds of it it would probobly be easier and sound better with a new headunit.

Re: stereo troubles 79vette (steve899)
You said the cassette and CD don't work? That unit is dead. Dump it and get a new one. Also replace all the wiring with new wire. That means power, ground and speaker wire.
thats what I thought , can anyone recommend a good head unit for a 79?
I was thinking maybe alpine.
Can't go wrong with Alpine. What is your budget and what are your preferences (CD, MP3, XM, DVD, etc.). Do you have/want an amp for your speakers/components? Subwoofer?
I think the best HU Alpine makes for the money is the 9813. 27 watts of real power, WMA, MP3, CD, etc. XM ready. Bass Engine Pro (on board crossovers, parametric EQ).
A great HU to get started. It has plenty of power to run coaxial speakers for now, then later on you can add an amp for components and/or a sub. It is $400 at Crutchfield, and I'm sure much cheaper on eBay.
