Looking for a new system
If I change it all can I get a better sounding system than a good working Bose? I dont want to spend more than $600. I want to use the factory openings as well. No additional holes. I am not real pickey on the sound quality. I just want something that can be heard over the road noise and the Borla's. This is an 88 convertible.
Any ideas?
$600 leaves you with a few main choices. You can get a decent HU and four interior speakers and maybe a budget sub/amp. But, keeping in mind you just want loud, fairly good sound and you have a vert- I would wave the sub and focus on a good set of components and rear speakers and a 2 channel amplifier for one of the pairs.
For the HU I would recommend a trip to your local stereo store. Stick with Kenwood, Alpine, Clarion, Eclipse, or Pioneer for a start. You are just looking for a decent unit with controls that you like and feel comfortable with. Budget around $200-250. If you want to save find a unit you like and search for it online.
I'll let the others chime in for specific C4 sizes and speaker recommendations. I would recommend CDT Audio for excellent sound and price.

What size speakers will fit in the factory dash openings? Bose did'nt use the dash openings, is that correct?
Can I leave the door speakers alone? Not use them and put speakers in the dash instead?
What size speakers fit in the rear boxes. This is a convertible so the boxes mount right in storage compartment floor. I guess I could open them up again and find out.
For an avreage system is it really necessary to run all new wiring to the speakers? I know the relays power the amps but do they also control the signal to the speakers?
run new wiring.. extremely easy in c4...
youn can fit 6x9s in the rear easily. But get 6.5's if you plan on using a sub.
