Advice needed on new stereo system install

Here are my wishes:
-deck cleanly and solidly installed in dash
-good sound i.e. 7-8 out of 10. I don't need super high-end quality. Balanced, but some extra bass is cool
-Power- loud is good, but I don't need 500 W to destroy my hearing. That's a job for sidepipes.
-Room for T-tops and rear window in storage.
-Stock as possible, all speakers and other components mounted neatly or out of sight.
What speakers are recommended?
How many?
Where to install?
What brand?
Do I need an amp?
Subwoofer?
I plan to do the installation myself. I have unlimited access to a machine shop, material, and electrical assembly tools so I plan to fabricated my own brackets and make my own wiring/cabling.
Thanks!

What's your budget?
would you be willing to pull out the carpet?
you could go with a sub if you like lots of bass, but you could also get a nice set of 6x9s. they'd take up the least room.
as far as an amp a single 4 channel would be good, can't really give you any to look at until I know what the rest of the system consists of.
As for your HU, if your dash isn't cut for a single din, it will need to be. you can cut yours or buy a replacement and cut that, so you can save your original if you want. They mount easy, you could fab up a support bar to hold the back and take some of the pressure off the plastic bezel, but it's not required.
i'm sure i've missed stuff, but answer those questions and we'll take it from there.

I Installed a Pioneer 1500 Mosfet50 in mine. Started with a hand hacksaw and startes cutting the dashboard SLOWLY. I ended up with a dremel to finish the opening. Speakers are 6 X 9 240 watt Pioneers and 4 X 6 Pioneers up front. The trick is the rear speaker boxes. I built them like the article. Made a big difference in the sound. Take your time. Good Luck.
What's your budget? not huge. i am still need to buy the speakers, a new or used replacement console.
would you be willing to pull out the carpet? sure

what is the minimum volume for a box with two 6x9s?
If you would rather have a sub then search the archives for posts by "payjamasam" and check out his hidden sub install.
Remove the carpet and put down a couple layers of Brown Bread.
if you do go with 4x6s for the fronts make sure they're at least seperates like Infinity makes. better would be to go with CDT comps either their CL or HD series depending on how much you want to spend. Also go with the largest size you can, which will be a custom fabbed install, either in the kicks or doors.
